Unhappy diff play

ignore the title, it isn't the carrier bearing...its something else

( http://forums.tccoa.com/showthread.php?t=56728 ) The 1/2 shaft has some play (up/down not in/out) in it on the pass. side. It's just a little bit, but enough.

good thing is I have a diff to swap out (my ole 3.07 diff) but I'm curious as to what causes this -- its a new diff, maybe a year old and I used the good stuff for lube in the thing. Oh well, anyone know what the procedure is to replace the thing?

96 Mark VIII [email protected] :: 03 radiator/fan - j-modded trans - BBK UD pulley kit - dual gauge pod - 28,000 B&M transcooler (w/ AN fits) - 3.73 locker (with speedo gear) - 180' thermo - 8.5mm wires - colder plugs
soon to install : "fixed" heads and a damn tune. Project snaked8 continues...
