Newbie here with a lot of AODE questions. School Me!

Hi guys, I am new to the board and have a few questions. But before I start I did pick up a 2000 model tranny out of a mustang. The car had a 3.8 in it. I plan on putting it in a Street/Strip 88 Mustang (302), (450-500 hp on the bottle) but i am currently running a carb setup.

quetions: Is this a 470rw tranny? Or how do i identify it as one?

How do I make this tranny work with my carb setup linkage wise?

Do i have to have an electronic control (factory computer, etc.) in order to make the tranny work, or can I use an aftermarket valvebody instead?

I really don't know a whole lot about auto transmissions. I just recently sold my tremec 5 speed out of the car because i hated it. So any help would be greatly appreciated!!
TIA,
-Robert

Yep, it's a 4R70W. IIRC, 95 was the last year for AODE's in Mustangs.

I'm pretty certain that you'll have to use some form of electronic control for it. Whether you use a factory EEC or an aftermarket setup to accomplish this is up to you.

Some of the trans experts here should be able to give you more info. Welcome to the boards.

Well, since a 4R70W is electronically controlled, you'll basically have two options:
You could get a 94-5 Mustang GT computer and wire that up - this would also require buying a chip, but most well-modified cars end up buying one anyway.
The other big option is to find a manual valve body from performance automatic.
If you are using a V6 trans behind a V8, especially for track use, I'd consider beefing it upjust a bit first. Get a spiral lock ring for the mechanical diode at bulkpart.com, and maybe add a clutch plate or two depending on how much your 302 is putting out. Use the OD 101 trans article as a guide.

96 Mustang GT 5spd. w/ 248A Option (GTS). Stock for now until I get the Roush on.

97 Thunderbird 4.6L LX /w Sport Package
24k B&M Cooler, 1" lowered, Steeda UD Pulleys, Dynomax cat-back, J-mod, 3.73's, PI intake, PI cams, 03 GT MAF/Tube, SCT tuned - Gone but not forgotten.

.
Well I called PA yesterday and talked to a guy in sales. He said that their regular street/strip AOD valve body would not bolt up to the AODE tranny.
I see a valve body listed in Jegs for 1996-up AODE for $280 or so. BUT is that valve body electronically controlled?
They also offer one for 92-95 for about $250.

I was thinking about using the Buamann (sp) control on the tranny and just putting a shift kit in it as well as taking the other suggestions in the 101 article.

OR should I just transfer the guts of this tranny into a regular AOD housing?

I'd go the Baumann route, but this is just an armchair racer talking. Why? What's cooler than shifting with your cruise control buttons?!?!

I'm currently suffering through an old worn out 4R70W, just as soon as I'd gotten used to standard on my Mazda. A manual valvebody or at least a transbrake would be fun right now.

PA couldn't find their own AODE/4R70W valve body? It's right here:
