Unhappy Shift lever problem

I have a 1996 factory sport and I have a strange problem. The shift interlock (the thing that keeps it from shifting into gear from park until the key is on and the brake pedal is engaged)sticks if left overnight .When you go to shift out of park and press the button on the shift knob it will not release. If you keep the button depressed as hard as possable eventually after pumping the brake pedal it will eventually release.Even when it is parked and started up again it is not always easy to shift out of park. The shifter does not line up on the red indicater in the black plastic PRNDL as well. I had the top off the console and lubricated the linkage under the shift indicator but the problem still persists.Any ideas would be appreciated,Thanks,Jim

I apologize for a mistake in my post.I just went out to my 97 and I noticed that it will go into gear as long as the key is on.There is no other interlock. My problem still persists though if it sits for a couple of days it is very hard to release.I have taken the shift knob off , removed the black plastic shifter indicator, and proceeded to go crazy with the lube, and the problem is still there.Sorry about the misinfo just put it down to old phart itis. Thanks ,Jim
