Mixing tranny fluid?

If I remember correctly, these cars came from the factory with Mercon, and were then respecced to Mercon V in the late '90s. If that is correct, and I don't know which of the two is in my car, would it be safe to top off with Mercon V or should I just have it flushed and refilled with some fresh MV?

Mercon V wasnt put in the cars till late '97. so, flush the fluid and replace it with Mercon V.

I was wondering that also. If I did a filter and fluid change to Mercon V, and did not flush, would the new fluid be happy mixing with the couple quarts left in the converter?
