Rear end oil change

I need some tips on the best way to drain and refill the rear end gear oil. Also, any tips on other things to do at this time would be apprecitated.

I suggest drilling a hole in the thing and tapping it for a plug. I like to do it in the cover instead of the housing, but the housing is lower. I do that because I fear hitting something and breaking the plug.

I use a magnetic heater to warm the housing and then use a large battery tester (syringe, turkey baster) to draw the fluid out through the fill hole. This proceedure works well and you don't have to pull the cover.

If you are going to do it that way drive it and warm it up then use one of those $6 pumps from Harbor freight to get it out.

I just pull the cover, let it drain, seal it back up with some black RTV, and refill it.

I just popped the cover, cleaned it out and the housing from all the old silicon and sealed it back up with RTV Blue. Then I used Valvoline 80w-90 and the pump that goes with the quart bottle. Thanks everyone, there are some great ideas here!

That casting only tells you it's an 8.8 the tag on the top bolt says it's a 3.27

Yes, I was reiterating what the tag says. My Town Car has a 3:27 rear end as well. Good on gas, nice power. I like the 3:27 rear ends. Now if I could just do something about the 3.8l engine... :p

I use that method for engine oil, transmission or differential.

To fill it there is a rubber plug in the spare tire well you can remove, then use a length of hose to reach the fill plug with.

well, just wanted to know if the rear fill plug to open up which way to turn?

can make it bulge both way. pb blastered couple times and still won't bulge. time to use breaker bar.

clockwise or anti clockwise to loosen up???

Good point. Never thought of that. This way is a lot easier, but a little more time consumuning since you have to take all the crap out of the trunk (which I already had out!).

I bought a pump that goes on a 5 gallon bucket for about $25 bucks, if you plan to do more than one it is well worth it.

goto auto zone and buy the 10 dollar suction gun. you suck all the fluid out, clean out the gun, then put the new fluid in
