Question Tranny + MerconV

Hi all,

Something appears to be confusing to me in the Tech Articles. Did some searching here in the forum, but couldn't find an answer. Maybe someone can clarify:

Mercon V Specs
Here it is stated that "'96 and up T-Birds & Cougars with the 4R70W use Mercon V. It can be used in the '94-'95 cars, but it is not recommended by Ford."

However:

All AOD, AODE and 4R70W
Here I find "For the sake of your car you should get the cooler, mercon V and new calibration that is recommended in the TSB. With all 3 of these, you will most likely not get shudder again."

So, can I use MerconV after a complete tranny flush or not? Those articles seem to state differently. Or did I miss something?

Any valuable input is greatly appreciated.

Yes you can. As long as you empty all you can from the system including the torque converter, you can fill with Mercon V. Of course if your trans. is already on it's way out it may be too late, new fluid or not. Is your trans. acting up?

Thanks Jay. Sounds like one tech article needs to be updated. Wasn't clear to me, mine is built in '94, but a '95 model.

Nope, the trans is working fine. But I don't want to push it, so I'm planning on doing a complete drain and flush, replacing the acummulators and do the reprogramming, all as described in the TSB's.

Better safe than sorry.

If you want to bring me the car I can do all of that work for you including the reprogram. Get a price from Ford and PM me with it. I don't know if they will charge you for that or not because I don't know if the TSB has expired for them to get paid by Ford or not. I have all of the stuff to do it.

Hey Darrin, when going from a stock 95 trans to an 01 trans., is there a need to re-program? And if so, is this something that you can accomplish w/o having the car in front of you? I don't want to ruin a new trans. because of a glitch in the software.

No, its fine Jay. The TSB was for torque converter lockup particular to a vehicle. It made changes as to how and when the PCM commanded the TCC to apply.
The only thing that you need to worry about is the gear ratios if you change transmissions and yours stayed the same. Pretty much other than that the stuff in the PCM for your car is fine unless you want to get a performance tune.

Thanks for the offer, I'll get back on that with you. Right now I have to replace the transmission lines which go into the radiator, rusted through.

Fixed that on another one with special rubber lines, okay, not original, but workes fine and was an almost instant fix.
