8.8 Rear Covers

Does anyone know of a better rear cover for our irs. The only thing that i could find is this one http://www.jblmotor.com/ProdS/rearcov.htm . Does anyone know if this is a direct bolt on or is some kind of modification required to mount this.

Any help would be gretly appreciated. I need a new cover soon because my factory one is cracked and i'm trying to make sure i get something thats gonna last.

AFAIK the best you can do is install a brace onto a stock cover. There are 3 stock covers I avoid the early ones because of the vent setup.

Damn, that thing looks pretty nice. So Alan, that will not fit then??? $295 doesn't seem like a bad price either, that includes the shipping.

Here is the one that Super Coupe Performance sells.

http://www.supercoupeperformance.com/

Just scroll to the bottom of the home page.

The one form JBL does not look like it will work. The one they have is probably for the Mustang Cobra IRS.

I e-mailed JBL to see if it will work on T-Bird/Cougar & this is the answer I received.

Quote:
If it is a beam axle unit, it will fit. If it is the IRS the rear mount is different then the stock unit. It is made to be mounted solid as in the JBL.

If some one else can enlighten me as to what the hell he is talking about I would appreciate it since it states that it is for the IRS 8.8.

the one you post the back mount is horicontal.

our irs use vertical, so that's mean the cover won't work.

the cover brace from steeda and 2 1/8" washer is your best bet, and cheaper too.

My daily job is to fry rice for my customers....

Hey Alan, what cover was on the 4.10 unit we pulled from my '93? Good or bad?

The reason I ask is I may use nitrous on the '96 and plan to have those 4.10s put in it with the rebuilt TL.

What about the one on the 4.30 setup we put in? I remember you pointing it out to me.

Is an 8.8 cover the same on all sides? Could that jbl cover be turned so the flange is vertical? That does look like a nice piece.

There are three different ones that I know of that come on IRS T-Birds, Cougars, and Lincoln MK VIIIs. There is also the one used on the Mustang Cobra IRS setup. They're all thin and weak, but from what I've read around the Internet, the Cobra version is considered the strongest. I agree, though, that the best you can do is install an aftermarket brace. There is no rear girdle cover that is a bolt-on for these cars. The JBL part may be for an IRS setup but not for a MN12 T-Bird IRS setup.
