Need Help With Mini Spool Install

Hey guys,

I got a mini spool for my dirt oval t-bird, the mini spool will be here wednesday. Just wondering if anyone has installed one of these in their cars? What all am I looking at getting into? I've never had the axles out of this car, what all do I have to do for that? And I figure while I have everything apart, I'm going to change the rear end fluid, any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Brandon

Bump,
The part is coming in on wednesday, so I'm going to try and have the rear out by either today or tommarow, any tips?

I've "heard" that a spool is not good for an IRS.
It might snap an axle.
Just what people have told me when I was going to install one.

Don't know if its true or not, since no one could back it up with actual evidence.

Well, the only thing I have in my advantage is that this car will never see pavement again. So I'm hoping that the dirt will provide enough slip to prevent breakage. I'll let you know how my axles make out, but I only run about 10 miles per race, and its on a dirt track.

let us know how well it works out....I'm still thinking of putting one in mine as well, since the car sees nothing but the dragstrip all the time.

If they say the axles are breaking, wouldnt you think that they would break anyway in our situations? having all the power going to 1 wheel seems more punishing to the axles than having all the power going to 2 wheels, but who knows. With the drag strip you never turn at a decent rate of speed ( or hope not to), and my wheels are always slipping anyway on the dirt track. I got my mini spool for $75 off one of the parts vendors I deal with for the race car. I'll let ya know how it works out and how good the quality and stuff like that is.

Will the spool have retaining grooves machined for the snap rings or will you need to have them machined?

Got it in

Here's the one that I got. (On the listing on the right for the 8.8 of course)

http://www.allstarperformance.com/product.htm?prod=415

I got it for $79, which didnt seem too awful expensive.

The fit and finish is realy good, It looks to be a very solid unit. There are 4 pieces to this and each is machined out of a solid piece of metal (not sure what, but I dont think its aluminum, hope not anyway LOL). As far as the retaining rings go, I honestly did not check, but when I test fitted the "side gears" to the axle (out of the car) the ring came through the other side, but not sure about on the car. I took the whole rear out of the car, not knowing, and upon further inspection, I kicked my *** because I'm pretty sure it can be done EASY in the car. Unfortuniatly the races were cancelled this weekend, so I did some doughnuts in the feild behind the house, and slid around a bit in the feild, and had no trouble. This saturday is a 50 lap race, so I hope the axles hold up.

Sorry I didnt get any pics of the install, was in a hurry to get it done, then the bastards cancelled on me.

Hope this helps you guys out,

Brandon

Yea, I had to tap them in with a hammer, then I couldnt get them to slide back out, so I'm content with it. Is the axle going to go anywhere? When took a peek when I had it all apart, it looked to me that unless the axle nut came loose, and the spindle fell off, that the axle could not come out? Dunno, I'm a noob at these T-birds.

BTW, from what I read on other mini spools, some state that they wont work on a limited slip, only open rears. Dont know if it matters or not, because mine was open to begin with.
