halfshaft question

About a year ago, I got my 3.73 gears and had them installed and I put the pumpkin back in.
Recently, I've noticed a feel and a noise at different speeds. At slow speeds, I notice that something (can't tell where) feels like I'm running on knobby truck tires. At higher speeds, it's more of a roar instead of a feel.
So...
I decide to check the rear end to see if that might be the culprit and I find that the driver's side halfshaft as it goes into the pumpkin, is a little greasy. The passenger one is dry. The area I'm talking about is the large steel/iron part that butts up against the side of the differential case, NOT the actual geared rod that inserts into the diff. I also noticed that it was not quite in all the wayin, maybe out by about 1/16th". Not much. Again, the passenger side was ok.
I think I remember a gasket or a seal around the inner shaft. I don't seem to be able to feel it when I pull it out a little and then push it back in.

A little help? Do I have a problem with the seal in the shaft?

The seal is there. . . .I can see it in the picture (I assume that is the seal you are talking about). If you can move the half shaft in and out of the differential by hand then I would pull that half shaft and make sure the retaining ring, pin (I don't know what it is called) on the halfshaft is still there.. . . . .The noise is probably coming from the fact that you have leaked all (enough) of the gear oil out of the differential over time with the half shaft moving in and out during driving to cause a noise. I would pull the differential plug and see if you are full of differential lube. . . . .if not, Off to the parts store Grasshopper!

Currently In the Short Bus Garage:
2 - '94 T-bird LX's 4.6L (one with 300,000+ miles and one with 200,000+ miles)
1 - '97 Mark VIII LSC - INTECH V8 (120,000+ miles)
1 - '97 F150 XLT 4x4 Flareside, 4.6L (130,000+ miles) - Currently being dismantled and rebuilt with upgrades!
1 - '00 Mustang GT (likes to accelerate with the brake on!), 4.6L (60,000+ miles - only comes out when I need to get somewhere fast.)

oh yeah, and they all have 4R70W's

Yeah, it's the retaining ring that I'm thinking of.
I'm sure I'm a small bit low, but I don't have any drippings on my garage floor.
I was hoping not to pull it, but I will. It's prolly what I need to do.

It should only be leaking while driving. . . . .the half shaft moving in and out will act like a very slow pump.

Currently In the Short Bus Garage:

Ah...
Well, it's out and the ring is still there. The outer seal is new from the rebuild.
Hmm...
The ring is supposed to be a "C" ring with about a half inch gap, correct?? Do they need to be replaced each time?

It is very easy to damage the seal when installing the axle. I have that problem on my car as well. it's not leaking much at all just staying damp. I checked the fluid in it a couple months ago after having the rearend n for about a year and it still hasn't lost any fluid. The cuplrit could also be a groove in the axle itslf. Sometimes sanding them off a little makes a difference.

Thanks guys.
The seal felt smooth. It's only had a couple thousand miles since rebuild.
I put it all back together and I'm off for more fluid and modifier.

Sigh...
Now I can't get the plug out...It's real tight for some reason. I don't remember tightening it like that. I'm afraid I'm gonna strip it out.
Any easy way to get the plug out without stripping it?

OK, I'm better now.
I pulled my exhaust (I really hate pulling lots of stuff to get to one thing...) so that I'd have a better go at the plug and I got it off pretty easily, although it was real tight. I will need to get another one cuz I tore into the old one pretty good.

What's torque spec on the plug? And do I need to put any loctite on it?

i would just snug it up and hell no on the loctite. (wasn't it a big enough pita to get it off this time. lol)
