NOOB Tranny questions

Alright I did some searches and just couldn't find a defintie answer to these ?'s.

I have a 1992 base model 3.8N/A

Auto tranny, but which one do I have?

I know in newer ones I have to use Mercron V, but in my old one can I use cheap old dex/merc mix? Or do I have to use Mercron V also?

Art Carr recommends running ONLY Mercon 3 in my Extreme AOD and this is obviously a much stronger tranny than OEM. Personally, I'm gonna listen to the manufacturer of my tranny over anyone else.

Got specs on that since you claim it is much stronger than oem? IMO alto clutches do not make a stronger transmission. I would do what they say because at least they will replace it if it breaks...less the shipping of course.

The only spec I have is that it is capable of withstanding over 600hp. I don't know that Ford would make much money if they put an OEM tranny capable of withstanding 600hp into a car that only generates 1/3 of that. Then again, life surprises me daily.

Please note that all I said was that you can mix Mercon 3 and Mercon V. I did not advise anyone on what to run in their transmission. I only answered the question that I quoted.

Specs on how much a transmission can handle from companies that reproduce them are worthless. The only way to know what it will handle is to push it till it breaks. A stock transmission will handle 600hp, just not for long. Art Carr is a strange company I have torn down several of their transmissions and yet to find 2 that are the same. They need to give a spec sheet if they are going to make claims that anyone should believe. A good transmission builder will have no problems giving you specs and details about everything inside the unit down to clutch clearance, material, quanity and the core the unit is built from.

Alan is right...I have seen the same, even from other vendors as well.

Though not "performance" oriented...Jasper has got to be the worst....they have some real crap in thier remans.
