leaking fluid :'(

recently i had my tranny pan gasket changed because i was leaking fluid. i started parking in the driveway again (had to stop because it was eating the paving) and i noticed i was still leaking stuff. seems that im still leaking tranny fluid because it has slipped 2 or 3 times since the replacement. now even with the heat on i can smell tranny fluid. what could this be? im at just about 97k miles, how much longer will it be before everything decides to go at once.

(cant remember if i filled out the profile info, i have a 1995 cougar 4.6l, no mods)

What gasket did you use?

Are you absolutely sure it wasn't the dipstick o-ring?

If you are smelling tranny fluid and you still have the stock exhaust, then I am betting that the extension housing has vibrated loose with mileage. It is easy to check. . . . .see if the tranny fluid is hitting the "y-pipe" where the exhaust comes together at the transmission k-member. If so, get under there and see if you can turn the extension housing bolts by hand. . ..I'll bet you can. It is a fairly simple fix, but quite involved to fix. 1 - '00 Mustang GT (likes to accelerate with the brake on!), 4.6L (60,000+ miles - only comes out when I need to get somewhere fast.)

oh yeah, and they all have 4R70W's

Does yours leak out the little access cover in the bellhousing? Mine is doing that.

Sounds like the front pump seal at the transmission could be gone for you. If you plan on stopping that leak, better make time to remove the trans.

That was my initial though. I talked to a transmission guy about it and he asked me a bunch of questions, one of which was if the fluid was dripping on the converter, which it wasn't when I looked. He said based on that, it probably wasn't the front pump seal. He mentioned some assembly that wears out and causes fluid to leak down the front of the transmission. I can't remember what he called it.

Thumbs up Check your Dipstick tube !!!!

I have a 97 Bird and I had a leak coming from the transmission, so I decided to replace the gasket and while I was doing that it made a good excuse to replace the original trans pan with a deep aluminimum pan. After the new pan was installed I still had the leak, It was hard to tell where the leak was comming from with the fluid all over the trans and the exhaust. After a good clean up I raised the car on jacks, my driveway has a downward slope, and found the fluid was comming from the front passengers side of the trans. I pulled the dipstick tube replaced the oring and sealed the outside of the tube with silicone sealer. No more leak. I hope this helps.

The dipstick tube o ring wouldn't make it leak through that access hole in the bellhousing, would it?
That would be great if that was it.

Here is a picture from the Ford manual.
Look at the drip running down the bellhousing. That seems like what mine is doing.
I am not sure if i should:
A) Replace the seal, and gasket between the pump and transmission.
B) Buy a front pump off EBay.
C) Replace the whole transmission.
The transmission does have a couple other problems. The valve body buzzes, although it may have stopped since I changed the fluid.
It shudders occasionally, even with new fluid. I did NOT use MerconV.
It seems to slip when it's cold.
Funny thing, right after I change the oil filter adapter gasket and stopped that leak is when this one started to get bad.
