Tranny Dying

Recently my trans has been acting up. Under hard throttle I get a noise resembling loud supercharger whine. Problem is, I don't have a supercharger . It's been getting progressively worse, noise getting louder with less pedal. It also "hitches" too with light acceleration although it shifts normally no slippage going up or down. I've been to the dealer and they said that it's on its way out. Same opinion as my father who is also a tech. If there is a fix or some suggestions for this it would be great.
But if there isn't what kind of trans is in it (96 LX 4.6 T-Bird) and are there other cars that have this same trans as mine that I can take out if it comes to that. Or a good place to get a rebuild?

The Jersey Shore is a stereotype, we're not all morons.
