Does this mean I need a new tranny???

Over the past month or so the car has been downshifting hard from 2nd to 1st. Here lately it is grinding in 1st, some in 2nd at low RPM, 3rd and 4th are still sounding good. Reverese is a crap shoot, sometimes it will lock and not backup at all other times it grinds and sometimes it is fine. Griding is getting louder, car seems to do better as it gets warmer.

Deatails.
40K ago it was drained (TC and all including new filter) and replaced with Mercon V
Origional Tranny, never replaced car has 197K.

I wish I could have done it more, but with 40hrs a week at work 18 hrs of class plus many more hours studying/homework, kinda cuts into time working on my car. And MERCON V is expensive.

So, I need a new tranny. Which cars bolt right up? And which are preferred? I would search, but this thread is already started and I got a bunch of unwanted crap when I searched.

Oh, and what might have failed. Im always one to learn, and if I swap a new one in I may just take the old one apart for fun.
