Will 275/40/17 fit an 8" wheel?

I have always preferred a 15" wheel on my own ride. Even though the 17" wheels and tires are super heavy they do look good. I just bought some polished 17x8 Cobra wheels for $260 with 2 good tires Couldn't pass up a deal like that. For replacing the bald rear tires I would like to use a 275/40/17. Has anyone tried this? Will they fit right or would I be better off with a 255 or 245 size?

BUMP- I am sure someone knows an answer to this. I noticed the 2 good tires on these wheels are Kuhmo Ventus 255/40/17. They appear exactly the same size as the 245/45/17 that are bald. Either one is around 10" wide. The 255 measures 10.2" section width while the 275 measures 10.9". Kuhmo's website says the 255 should be on an 8.5" rim min., and the 275 on a 9" min. Maybe that tells me the proper answer to this question. What I am looking for is someone who wore a set of 275's out on an 8" rim and had no problems or worries.

I would just get the 275's and try, but a blowout at 100+ mph would ruin my day, as would a sidewall without enough support failing due to an improper rim size. Looking at the 255's on my rims says fudging 1/2" is fine. A full inch too small wheel might be debatable.

I may just get some new front tires and put the 255's on the rear for now.

These wheels are oem vs frpp- but here is the same wheel in frpp- http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...tKeyField=3862

I know Nitto NT-555's will work in a 275/40 on an 8" wheel.

the factory size on the 03-04 cobra was 275 40 17, and those were 9" rims
