Tires on sport wheels

Out of curiosity, what size tires are yall runnin on sport wheels? Specifically, staggered sizes. I want 255's in the rear as I believe that is as wide as you can go on a 7'' wheel.
Also, how important is it that the fronts and rears be the same diameter in regards to throwing off the spedo and the odo?

I run 255/50 on the front and rear. They aren't many choices in that size. Pretty close to stock diameter, so the speedo gear works ok.

Speedometer and odometer accuracy are affected only by rear tire diameter.

Staggered tire sizes have a significant impact on handling, however.

Yeah, if i was gonna go the same size all the way around, that is what i was thinking of doing. But i really wanna stagger the sizes and stay as close to stock size as possible. So i was thiinking of doing 255/55 16 in the rear and 215/65 16 up front. They are the exact same diameter and are only about 3/16'' taller than stock. i was curious if anybody else uses those sizes or atleast the 255/55's because the only thing i can find in that size are the general grabber uhp's.

Unfortunately, I don't believe there is a simple answer. The impact of staggered tire sizes on handling is interrelated with other factors, like the size of your front and rear sway bars and front to rear weight bias. I run 255 fronts and 285 rears, combined with a 1-1/8" rear bar. This combination delivers pretty neutral handling, but with the stock rear bar I would expect the car to "push" noticeably. As they say in the advertising disclaimers, "your results may vary".

I run sumitomo HTRZs in 255s on my sport wheels all around, but my car doesn't see the winter. I would honestly run the same size all around so you can rotate them. If your 'wide' tires were 285s I would obviously stagger, but if your 'wides' are only 255s I think keeping them the same size would be best.

I've run 255/50/16's on Sport wheels with great success. I plan to run them again once spring gets here. (I'm using all season 225/60/16's for the winter). They look good, drive good, and fit good. No problems I've noticed.

My car is lowered almost 2 inches in the front and I have encountered no problems or rubbing of any sort. I will say the tire is close to the spindle below the upper ball joint though.

lowered, koni sport adjustables, 4.30 tl in aluminum housing, mark 8 trans, j-mod, 93 mark viii ds, antenna hole=gone, kooks headers 1.75" primaries, 2.5" catless duals, midmount magnaflow, 96-97 sport wheels with 255/50/16 sumitomo HTR Zs, optima in the trunk, new motor...94 mark 6/6/08

My car is lowered 0.75" at both ends. With +40mm offset, 9" wide wheels, the 255s scuffed the spindles when cornering. I added 5mm thick spacers in the front, and there were no more problems. Probably would have worked without spacers if the wheels had slightly less positive offset.

I've heard good things about the Grabber UHP tire - it's cheap and from most accounts it sticks pretty well. But why would you want to put such a narrow tire on the front? The MN12 chassis already tends to understeer, and putting skinny tires up front and wider tires in back is likely to make that worse. Most of the staggered setups I've seen and heard of have wider (than stock) tires up front and significantly wider tires in back. Like 245 front and 275 rear. Personally, I'd just keep them the same width so that they can still be rotated for increased tread life, but I do understand that staggered tires look pretty sweet.

Besides looking cool, wider rear tires than you can fit in front improve traction somewhat if you are making big power. And, as I noted above, you can tame the understeer by substituting a stiffer rear sway bar. But yes, you do give up the ability to rotate and thus extend tread life. Not an issue for me because I only drive my T-Bird a couple of thousand miles a year, now that is no longer a daily driver.

Yeah, i totally see what youre saying about the narrow front tires. I wanted to do a 225 up front but i cant find the Grabbers in a 225. And Grabbers are the best option i can find for what i want in the rear. I would go wider than 255 in the rear, but you can't fit anything wider than that on a 7'' wheel. And, since the car has 215's from the factory, i didnt think it would be too big a deal, however you raise a valid point. So now, I am almost leaning more towards just goin the same size all around like almost everyone that has posted here has said.. I mean, other than the exhaust, my car is basically stock so i dont know how my handling would be affected if i went w/ the 255 and 215 setup. I guess not much.

I never had any problems with rubbing when I was using 255/50/16's but when I ran 155/50/17's the tires wanted to rub on the lower part of the bolt below the upper ball joint. I just ground off the lower part of the bolt, no problems with clearance. I've got some pics somewhere if you want to see what I'm talking about. but as I said I had no problems with the 255/50/16's, and I'm running with Eibachs. Its lowered about 1.5" - 2.0".

I see the point of wider tires in the rear if the tires in the rear are wider than can fit in the front wheel wells. Like, for example, 285-series rear and 255-series front. 255s will fit reliably in the front but 285s wont. When you're running your wider rear at 255, a size which will fit in front, I don't see much reason for running narrower tires in the front other than looks.

Probably not too much if you don't get crazy in the corners. If you're more concerned with straight line performance, the widest tire you can put in the rear is better, and the fronts don't matter too much. I am oriented more toward autocross and track events than drag racing so that's what my mind went to first. But if you are more concerned with hooking up and taking off in a straight line, that stagger probably won't hurt your handling noticeably.
