tire advice

what are the best tires for my stock non sport tbird ??
mustangs n tbirds have the same lug pattern???
whats yalls opinion on the cobra wheels on a tbird?

Definitly one of the most popular aftermarket rims for tbirds. Looks best in 18s.

Non sport stock wheels would be 205 or 215 15s, unless he's already gone aftermarket.

I went with Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s 215/70/15 because IMO they're the best bang for the buck. If you look them up on tirerack they get the best ratings out of all similar tires, not to mention all rated categories are either "excellent" or "very good." A set of four tires for under $400 with excellent all around all season traction. Not a lot of road noise either. Not to mention they look cool. A lot of people on here seem to like Cooper Cobras and BFGoodrich Radial T/As as well.

Firehawks are good, my personal favorites are a subbrand of Goodyear called FIERCE. Buy FIERCE UHP tires, they're Z-rated and even though they say "245" they have a LOT of footprint to them. They look more like 275s than 245s.

They are definitely EXTREMELY grip happy, too. I have a set of 245/50ZR16 Fierce UHPs on the GF's mustang.
QUANTUM improvement over the Bridgestone FUZION HRi's that were on it.

I'm running 245/60/R15 on mine; looks good and has some grip. I used Dunlop GT Qualifiers and love them. I will probably stay with Dunlops (used to run BFG and Firestone). None are bad tires!

Mods? Do the ones in the garage waiting to go on the car count?

LOL Wow, funny you should ask. I'm not related to him, but he did buy the Ford dealership from my dad back in the 70's... So I do know him of course. I've been in and out of that dealership hundreds of times since I was a kid. He's got a GT-500 sitting in the showroom right now.

I do plan to get to MoKan as much as possible this summer... For the Fun drags. I'm anxious to find out just what I can run once I get the 3.73's in and the 255/50's put on. Love to see another T-bird there!

If you like white letters, hard to beat BFGoodrich Radial TAs or Firestone Firehawks for looks. I also have some Lemans SR tires (same as Dayton / Bridgestone / Firestone Firehawk Indy 500, same tread, different letters) in 215/70-15 on the rear of a GoldWing Trike that look good, and the lettering is balanced .... they are good looking tires.

A 245/60-15 is just a itsy bitsy hair shorter than a 215/70-15, but are much wider. The charts reccomend a 7-9 inch wheel for them, you have 6.5 inch wheels. They'ld work, others have done it, but they will really bulge from the rim and probably squirm around some. They'ld be about the widest you could run.

Personally, on a 15x6.5 inch wheel, I'ld either go with the 215/70-15 at all 4 corners or 235/60-15 at all 4 corners (I've seen 245/60-15s on a 7 inch wheel, lots of bulge even then.). 235/60-15s are reccomended on a 6.5-8.5 inch wheel.

The figures below are from a chart where you can enter info and compare. Because both the 235/60 and 245/60-15 tires are shorter than 215/70-15 tires, to run the same actual ground speed, your speedo will read slightly higher. Or, in another sense, you get a cushion added that maybe prevents a ticket someday .... as every officer has that "certain magic number" in mind when working some radar, a number over which he considers you fair game.

Stock Tire - 215/70R15

Tire 1 - 235/60R15 (be my choice)

Radius: 13.05 in 331.47 mm
Revs per Mile: 796.9
Speedometer: 61.7 mph 102. km/h

Tire 2 - 245/60R15
Section Width: 9.64 in 245 mm
Rim Width Range: 7 - 8.5 in
Overall Diameter: 26.57 in 674.87 mm
Radius: 13.28 in 337.31 mm
Revs per Mile: 782.8
Speedometer: 60.6 mph 101. km/h

A new tire comes with about 10 or 11 / 32s rubber. A well worn 215/70-15 is 26.85 inches diameter minus the 16/32 you wore off, or about 26.35 inches diameter. A new 235/60-15 is 26.10, or exactly about 1/4 inch shorter, that's 1/8" less tread rubber. The height is that close, you'ld not notice it.


Also, these birds once used a bastard size tire that first appeared in the early '80s on the Monte Calo SS, Buick GN, Cutlass 442, Pontiac AeroCoupe, and etc, a 215/65-15 that was shorter itself. My '92 Sport came with this size tire and is so marked on the door sticker.

It's short looking, but there was room for tire chains.

Tire 3 - 215/65R15

For a really long legged Bird on straight west Texas roads like ...



... you could use somethinkg like those below on back, but ..... note that since they are TALLER, your speedometer would read lower and you'ld be going the same speed, like 57 mph on the speedo would see you actually going 60 mph .... which works against you when you fly through radar maybe.... but if one is so inclined to run 85 or 90 in a 70 zone, whats a few more to them right?

I've got the Firehawk Indy 500's in 225/70/15 on my '95 T-bird and I'm very pleased. Good bang for the buck for sure.

Those Indy 500s are the exact same tire as the Lemans SR I have on my Trike rear, just different lettering. I looked at both tires side by side at my dealer but chose the Lemans SR for the lettering and the fact that they were going on a "Gold Wing 1500 / Leman Trike".

They look GOOD in either case.

This '95 I recently got has the B F Goodrich Radial T/A s in 215/70-15 on it's fanblades at 34 psi cold, drove it on it's first real road trip yesterday, 476 miles, they are good tires.

Last set I had was on my '69 Dart Swinger 340 back in the early '70s in size 225/60-14 on 14x6 Chrome Slots, but as good as they were then ...
... I had never used them again (though why I don't know). Coming home last night, we hit rain, very confidant feeling tires. Ride was excellent. Bird never broke traction in the wet.

I even had to make a quick evasive cut to the right and a correction when I met a wrong way driver coming east in the left west bound lane of Rt 460 on the crest there in front the Weston Motel just west of Crewe, Va. near 10 PM (fool was 1/2 way on grass, 1/2 way in lane ... called #77 and got an on duty unit to check it).

The previous owner had well used ones on front and new ones on rear, guess they were replacing as needed.

I may well get two more and finish a set before going to the 16" sport wheels I recently aquired ...

Or

... I may save these two new rears for use on the trike?
