what is the largest tire for 17'' Cobra rims on a 97 Cougar?

Hello,

Before I sold my 97 Cougar I put on a set of 17'' Ford Racing Cobras on it.

The new owner would like to know what is the largest tire that can be used with out a rub?

If I recall it has 255/45/17 now.

it depends on the offset. 255/45/17 can rub on some, 245/50/17 is usually safe.

If I recall they are the factory 97-98 style

5.72" backspacing

30mm offset

So 55/17 would be a bad idea?

I've read that 255/45 is about all you'll get, at least on the fronts. If I ever get my hands on the wheels I want I'll probably go that size up front with 285s in the rear.

I have a set of three 235/55/17's I'm about to remove from my crown vic and he wanted to use them if they would fit.

I'm just unclear about the 55 I think it will be to tall and rub.

235/55 is 27.2" in diameter, stock 205/70 is 26.3" in diameter. 255/45 is 26.0" in diameter (and 285/40 is 26.0" as well fwiw).

I think they are going to look goofy since they are not as wide. But I kind of like my tires wide.

Don't forget, that's diameter. You'll actually be 0.9" taller overall, however only 0.45" of that will be over the height of the stock size but on both sides.

I could see it clearing in the back but I don't think it will clear the control arm's in the front.

I honestly don't think an extra half inch is going to make that big a difference in clearances unless you're ridiculously lowered. The biggest thing I'd worry about is the speedo; with a 235/55 you'd be 3% off, more or less meaning that at 60MPH your speedo says you're going 58.
