255 50 17 Tire options

Looking for new tires for my car. I have 17x9 wheels and previously had 245 50 17. I looking to go with a slightly wider 255 tire. There are not many options in the 255 50 17 size. Discount tire has a few options from Nitto. Anyone have any thoughs on Nitto tires or other suggestions in this size?

I've got 255/45/17 Firehawk Wide Ovals on my 17x9s and they do the job. From what I found they are similar to the NT555s, although they've been superceded by Wide Oval Indy 500 (ThunderChecken has a set).

Thanks just did a quick search and it looks like they only offer that tires in 255 45 not 255 50

I currently have Nitto INVO 255/50/17 ZR's on all four corners of my bird. I love them so far. The front upper control arm ball joint stud excess needs to be clearanced for fitment of these tires. Before these I was using Riken Raptor 245/45/17 ZR's prior to these and they were a bit firmer, not bad for a lower level tire. I switched to Nitto's after having great expierences with the 555 series on another vehicle and finding a fantastic deal on the complete set of INVO's. Either way both Riken Raptors and Nitto INVO's are available in 255/50/17. I wouldn't hesitate to use either.

255/50/17's

Hankook makes the ventus rh06 and the ventus k104 set in that size
Riken makes the raptors in that size
Kumho makes the Ecsta SPT in that size
Nitto makes the 555, the 450, and the INVO in that size
Falken makes the Ziex STZ-01 in that size
Toyo make the proxies in that size
BFGoodrich makes the T/A KDWS in the sizes
Yokohama makes Advant S/T v102 in that size

That's most of your choices but I refuse to run yoko garbage anymore. Also I'm against the grain on this but I prefer a non-directional tire, for practicality over looks. I love how directionals look and sound but I hate that I can't rotate them in the proper modified "x" pattern. Another reason I like my new Nitto's.

Thanks for the list Chris. Between Tirerack and discount tires I had found most of those. I'm leaning towards the Nitto 555 since I have always heard good things about them and the price isn't too bad. I saw the Falken and Handcook tires on their site but know nothing about them.

Keep in mind too, some of those are actually made as sport truck tires ... pretty much any of the ones that you see with "ST" somewhere in the name, they are intended for truck applications. Not to say that you can't use them on an MN-12, but the ride and handling characteristics might not be the same as something made for passenger car applications.

kinda off topic a little, but....

i run BFG 255/50/16ZR on mine, and it seems like the front right is wearing on the inside. this is after having 4 wheel alignment done the DAY i got them, and then had it re-checked after about 1.5 month when i saw the wear. could this be the ball joint stud rubbing? the other 3 are wearing fine and i have no pull or bounce/wobble issues. i looked at that as a possible issue, but it seemed like it cleared.

Ball Joint! To add to that... if they aligned it like that then you got ripped off. They'll have to re-align it when you/they put in a new ball joint

You don't need an alignment for just a ball joint. For a lower control arm however, you will.

all front end parts are maybe 3 or 4 years old. i put them on my first bird when i got it. then i wrecked it and swapped all parts over to this one. that was last May i think. they were still in good shape. parts are trw/moog as far as i remember.

Hey,

Sorry you are having a bit of a problem.

But when I had those rims and tires from brand new they never rubbed anything and I have also replaced all the front end stuff and had a good alignment done.

I never had a problem with any tires wearing funny with the rims either and I had them on my car for almost 5 years. I did keep min of 40psi in them.

I am sure it was whoever you had work on your car they missed something.

i think the same. i'm going to have it re-aligned at a different shop. that's $80 not very well spent. i rolled the one that was wearing to the back, and now i have a matching pair. they said it may have already had a wear pattern. now that the 2nd tire is wearing the same, that's obviously wrong. is there anything i can hold them accountable for, or do i take my licks and move on to another shop?

also, my upper CA bushing in the back are worn, and they said 'it looks like this tire was on the back'. thing is, those bushings have been bad (were bad on my other bird) and the rears have always worn evenly. the drivers side is wearing fine (front/rear).

If it was me I would go back to the shop that did it. You signed a piece of paper telling you your rights and you should have gotten some kind of warranty from them for there work.

Was it a named brand shop? ie...Firestone,Tire Kingdom, Sears???

Go back and demand that they make things right ...I know I sure would!

it was Big 10 Tires. not sure how big they are. i went back, and they said 'this wear is not alignment related'. i said how the hell can it not be? i made them put it back on the rack, and they said it was good (idk wth i'm lookin' at with all those numbers). i took that at face value. now i have 2 tires that are worn. honestly, i don't want their tools back on my car. and i'm sure they'll throw me the whole 'they were used tires' bit. the only thing i want them to do is supply me 2 new tires. i'm sure that will not happen.

this is why i do my own work. everything except mounting/balancing tires, and alignments...

I understand where you are coming from, I hate to have anyone work on my car just for that reason.

You can do this then since you have to pay for another alignment go to a trustworthy place and tell them what happened and if they tell you it was off then take that info and confront the other place.

If they blow you off and I would get ahead of the corprate off and make a dispute.

that was 100% my plan of action. i almost called you the day that i took it back up there and they told me it was a 'wear pattern' issue - just so i could verify that as NOT the issue. anyways, thanks for your insight (and the kick-ass deal on the wheels )
