265/40R17s will they fit?

On the 24 hours of lemons car, the time has come to get some decent rubber on the car and see what we can do for handling. We will be doing the mustang hub swap, and I have a bunch of SN95 17x8 mustang wheels to run on the car, but what I am wondering is if I will have any clearance issues with those wheels and tires? If anyone has ever done this setup, let me know how it worked. I'd like to get the widest possible tire we can on the car. I'm not worried about fender clearance cause the car doesn't have to look pretty and I'll just bend the fenders out of the way, but I would prefer not to have to run wheel spacers so I need to know if they will clear the spindle. Thanks.

Mike

I can say I have 275/40/17 on the rear of mine. No problems. No spacers.

OK, so I'll be good on the rears. How about the fronts? I would like to run the same size front and rear so the car will handle as good as possible. I was doing a little bit of research and it seems like the mustang wheels have less offset, so that should make them sit further out away from the spindle, so hopefully I'll be good. Like I said, the fender isn't an issue cause I'll cut, pry, bend, or roll whatever I need to out of the way to make them fit. It doesn't need to be pretty, I just want it to corner.

Shouldn't be an problem, most of the front tire clearance issues are at the spindle. That's almost a non-issue with mustang offsets. You could even get a 275 up there.

From what I have read though, a 275 on an 8" wheel will be a little too wide, and won't handle properly. Unless I happen to come across a set of 17x9s for cheap.

As mentioned, those are a bit wide for 8" wheels, but they will fit on the car. Several years ago I had 275/40/17 Hoosier race rubber (which are wider than most street 275s) jammed on to OEM SN95 Mustang 8" wheels on my car, no rubbing issues.

Ed, since you have quite a bit of experience road racing an MN12, do you think I should go with 265s or 275s? The rules state the tires need to be a street tire with a minimum treadwear of 190 so I was looking at the Dunlop Direzza. If I can get a good deal on some 17x9s I'll do that and run 275s but the 17x8s seem to be way more plentiful and dirt cheap.

Direzza DZ101, or Star Spec? The Star Specs are 200 treadwear rating, and the largest they are available in 17" is the 265/40 size. They also show as going on a minimum 9" wheel, same as a 275 would.

Not sure what else is out there in a 200 treadwear tire that is available for a reasonable price in 275/40/17, but if you are leaning toward getting 8" wheels and squishing something on there, I can say that the Star Specs are kick-ass tires. I have them on my beater SHO track day car, and they hang on like crazy, dry or wet. Street ride isn't great, but that's the trade-off. The DZ101 aren't bad either, we had those on a Contour that I drove in a Chumpcar race last year, but nowhere near the grip level of the Star Specs.

I don't think that you would notice much difference between having 265 or 275 rubber unless the rest of the car was optimized ... they work decently for what they are, but when you boil it down they are still a heavy pig to be wielding around a road course.

cheers

OK, good to know. Direzza star specs 265/40/17s it will be. The swap meet is coming up this weekend so I'll see what I can track down as far as wheels. If I can find a set of 17x9s for a decent price I'll pick them up, and if not I'll run them on the 17x8s and see how they do. I'm also working on getting more weight out of the car, and then between sticky tires, cobra brakes front and rear, and cutting as much as I can out of it, hopefully we can turn some decent times in June.
