Question Wheel Offsets

Will a +35mm offset work with an 8" front and a 10" rear? I'd like the tires to come right out to the edge of the lip. Thanks.

I'm running 36mm 9" wheels in front and 45mm 10" wheels in back and I'm perfectly even with the outsides of my fenders on all four corners.

R8D-XXX,

I love those wheels! They are the ones I want to get for my '95 SC. I'm considering 20x8.5 for the fronts and 20x10 for the rears with the black centers (my car is pearl white). They only offer the 20x8.5s with a +30mm and the 20x10s with a +45mm offset. That would stick the fronts out further by about 1/4". How do you think that would work? Would milling of the pad be required?

Even the 18x9s only come in +24mm or +30mm, and the 18x10s are +22mm or +40mm. What would you recommend out of these 18" & 20" sizes for the best fit?

Would you mind telling me what size tires you are running so I can get an idea of widths and heights?

Did you have any issues with the tires rubbing, and what did you have to do to correct it?

Did you wind up lowering your car either before or after putting those wheels on it?

I VERY MUCH appreciate any help you can give me with selecting the right wheel sizes! Thanks for your time.

I like 18's and if you go with those, make sure you get the 30/40 mm offsets. They will probably barely stick out past the fenders but won't be much.

I'm not too familiar with 20's as I have never ran them. But I believe Phatbird on the board here ran the 20x8.5s with a +30mm and the 20x10s with a +45mm offset in the Godspeed wheels and they worked out good for him.

Just keep in mind though that with which ever set you go with, you will need to roll the inner fender lips all the way around, especially if your car is lowered. My car was already lowered when I put my new setup on and I had a problem cutting into my tires before I did some more changes. I rolled my fenders and also installed that airbag kit in my back springs. It was more work but everything worked good after that.

As far as tires go, you will want a set of 245/45/18's for the front and I have 285/40/18 in the back. When you buy a tire/wheel package, most places will sell you a 255/45 for the front. That is what I received and they were too big. I ended up cutting those all up in the front even after I rolled my fenders but my car is also lowered pretty good. But after I chewed those up, I went down to a 225/40 in the front and haven't rubbed them since.

Thanks VERY MUCH for all of that very useful info! You've just saved me a bunch of headaches.

It's my opinion that both you and PHATBRD have two of the most bangin' Thunderbirds out there! Bravo!

Depends on how much the car is lowered. I had 255/45R18 on 8.5" +35 wheels on the front of my 95 SC that was lowered 1-1/2" with Eibachs. It would rub very lightly on few occasions, certainly not enough to do any damage to the tire or fender.

The problem with going to down to such a small tire as 225/40R18 on a heavy car like an MN-12, is that you are going to be near to or at the limit of the load capacity of the tire. Most tires in that size have a load index of 88, which is 1235 lbs. at maximum inflation. Certain tires in that size are extra load rated (XL), at 92, which is better at 1389 lbs. Original MN-12 tires are all either 96 or 97 load index, you really shouldn't use much less than that to be safe.

Ed, thanks for posting that! Your tires sizes that you listed above got my curiosity up. My post above was a total fail! I should have checked stuff out before I went throwing numbers out there.

When I first bought my wheels, the fronts came with 255/45/18's and those are the tires that I ended up shredding pretty bad. I went one size smaller to a 245/45/18 and that tire has worked out great on my car!

I fixed the tires sizes in my post above.

245/45R18 would be my recommendation, especially if you're doing staggered widths, then the diameter matches well with 275/40R18.

When I did 255/45R18, I had that size all around.
