I have ~3/8" spacers on the front of the Toyota, and they have been fine. They use extended shank lug nuts.
But when you start thinking of the wheel riding on the ends of the wheel studs, it makes you a little nervous. When drive wheels are involved, it would make me a lot nervous! Especially if you are talking about a 1" spacer.
