315s on MN12s

I plan on big HP soon, to around 500 at the wheels and, besides all planned suspension modification, i'd like to get a grip, so I was wondering what is the absolute max tire capable of being fitted, as i plan on going with the mustang hub swap. If the fender lips are rolled, would that increase the amount of space available? I would like to go with 17's for wheels or maybe 15's with some spares up front for drag purposes. i also plan the 89-92 spindle swap and mustang swap on t he front to get some space for 275s or more on the front if possible. Has anyone widened stock wheels? Angola Wire nearby widens wheels for $75 a set and it would keep the car sleepy . I have the aluminum 21 spoke cougar wheels, 15x 6.5. Also, how much space would there be available if i employ this method? would i have to add spacers to the hub ?

500 at the wheels?

What motor are you going to be using?

As for the tires, i think george davenport has 315's on the back of his car. He had to have the fender flared out I beleive also.

i've posted my plans on the site before, the 4.6 sohc, but with help from pulleys and such. it will be completely built. how did davenport get them to fit exactly? how much adjustment was necessary?

George D. has 285-40-17 tires on 9.5" wheels on the rear of his SWB car. Wayne Ing up here in Toronto area had some old worn out 315-35-17s on the back of his car (somehow jammed on 8.5" wheels !!) many years back, basically to see if they would even fit. They did, but as I recall they were old Goodyear Eagle GS-C tires, which tended to be small for a given size.

If you really want to hook up 500 rwhp, any kind of 315 street tire isn't going to do the job. You'll need a set of Hoosier or Mickey Thompson DOT drag tires ... the guys in the SCCoA who are in the 11s are usually running 26.0x10.50 or 11.50 M/T E-T Street tires on the back.

so you say that 9.5" wheels fit in back? with how much backspacing and offset ? How close are these 26.0 x 11.50's to stock diameter? And is there three inches of space for the stock wheels to be widened or is it better to go aftermarket for some reason besides looks? 75 is a lot cheaper for now than a new set of wheels for now.

9.5" wheels would need to have about 6.25 to 6.5" backspacing to fit under the car.

The 26.0x11.50 M/T tires are approx. 26" tall, so within 1/2" of stock diameter roughly. They will go on something like an 8" wheel, so you can save some money there. Link to info off the Mickey T. site:

I know XR7Dave has a 12sec ccougar and runs 285's on the rear for the street. He has custom wheels, but they fit very nicely and it looks mean as hell.

Dave Dalke has the same size combo as George ... 285-40-17 on 9.5" billet rims with 6.25" backspacing. Fender lips need to be "massaged" a bit to clear the 285s.

At the dragstrip, he runs Mickey Thompson E-T Street, 26.0x10.50x16, on stock 16" wheels.

so 285's fit? damn, had my heart set on 315 or 335's but i think the shock assembly is in the way of putting in tubs. 11.50's minimum for the track, i want to ensure all the grip i can get. i'll get a transbrake so i can shock the tires effectively.

but has anyone widened the stock wheels? how much width can i add to t he inside of the stock wheels with stock measurements before i have to add spacers?say with 285's?
