15x7.5 question

Ok, just a small beat the horse to death tire question. If the widest, best mate to road surface on a stock 6.5" rim is a 245, why cant i put a 49mm wider tire on my 7.5? Most of the tires I see that are around a 275 say the recommended rim width is 7.5"-9". Thanks

most tire companies recomend not going above 235/60 on a 6.5" wide wheel.

If you decrease the ratio from 60 to 55, the width has to be closer, so you have less range you can use.

I don't know much about cars, but if the recommended width is 7.5" to 9" that means it will fit a 7.5" rim.

What is 49mm? Do they make tires with odd sizes like that? I've only seen 205,215,225,etc.

I'm confused.

I know, but you said people were putting a 245 on a 6.5" wheel, which is not recommended, but people do so anyway. 245 is definately not the best, just the widest in 60 series.

So most companies say you can mount a 275 on a 7.5" wide wheel. Whats the problem? You can go beyond the recomended on a stock rim but not an aftermarket?

btw, what size wheel do you have? 17"?

I would always look up the specs on the tire you are looking and go from there.

On a 16x7 rim a 225/60/16 is a very good fit.

I would never put bigger than a 235 on a 7" rim. But that is just me.

As far as I'm concerned a good 225 tire is going to grip better than a "ok" 245 tire.

I can spin the **** out of my winter tires all the way to 50mph, but my summer tires I can barely spin. And they are both a 215 width.

I'm getting 16" sport rims in a few weeks and Im going to put a 225/60/16 on them. Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EPs.

I would go with a 245/60-15. sure it's the same width but you don't want to go wider than 245 upfront anyway, and 245s on a 7.5 wheel will handle better than 245s on a 6.5 wheel.
