New Tires, What Size for 16's

I've been searching for hours, but i need more answers...

I recently purchased a set of 94 SuperCoupe 16's. Well, the warm wheather is rolling around and i'm gonna have to mount some rubber on them. Right now i'm looking at stock size 225-60-16's just because of the variety and pricing, but i'd like your input on what size would look best on a car that isn't lowered. If anything, i want a wider tire with a little less sidewall, i was thinking maybe 235-55-16's. Any comments or suggestions are welcome, and if you would post pics, that would be great too.

94 SC, Black with Blue interior

235-55-16 is a nice choice for the stock wheels, not too much tire for that rim width. And it's also within 1/2" of the stock diameter as well. Several of the SCCoO members here are running that size with good results.

I put Goodyear Eagle HP 235-55-16s on my tbird about a year ago. The tire is actually about 1" wider than the 225-60-16 Eagle GTII that I took off. I really like the look.

I put a set of Kuhmo 235-60-16's on mine. Got them from TireRack for $55 each.

98 4.6 SOHC, J-Modded, B & M 24K Tranny Cooler, Cold Air Intake, 76 MM MAF, RM Tube, March 1150 U/D Pullies, Poly Bushings, Air Bags, MK VIII Brakes and Wheels, Trak-Lok w/ 3.55's MK VIII Flex plate and Marauder T/C. Now that it can go, it'll be time for show.

Same here..no complaints-they hook great in the dry,and hold the road well in the wet.Nice mileage so far too.

wouldn't recommend these if you don't have at least 3.27s or lower gears(numerically higher)

basically since the higher or wider the tire, the more drag it is on the car, lower gears help out

OK..I see where you're coming from..but here's some facts...

225/60/16:
OD-26.63"
revs/mile-757.35

245/45/16:
OD-24.68
revs/mile-817.15

That's a 7.32% difference in OD,and will make the Speedo approx 5mph off.
The thing is..the 245/45/16 is a shorter tire-so it will put less load on the engine since it effectively lowers the final drive ratio-just like installing lower gears.
In this case..it would be like going from stock 3.27's to approx 3.49.
that more than makes up for the .79" of extra width.

the perfect size for 16's imho is 245/55/16 very difficult to find but is almost of the same size as 225/60/16 but wider.

1990 5-speed BHJ balancer , ASP underdrives with march WP pulley, 5%OD, optima red top, Magnaflow resonator no cats, solid motor/tranny mounts .

Actually guys, i'm thinking about goin with these. I have heard a lot of comments about 225 60's looking too small for the T-birds large wheel well. But i'm thinking of lowering the car anyway. tire formula

as promised, here's the formula but first let me mention that this is used to find out what the best tire diameter is (how tall is tire is, not written on street tires only on slicks and big tires for trucks) also make a note that taller tires do cause your mpgs to drop a little
I'll use an example with the formula:

tire diameter = 2 X (section width/25.4) X (aspec ratio/100) + rim diameter

so, I'll use this example
using P235/60R/15 tires and have 3.55 gears in the rear


tire diameter = 2 X (235/25.4) X (60/100) + 15
= 2 X 9.25 (rounded) X .60 + 15
= 2 X 5.55 + 15
= 26.1 inches (round down to 26)

then take the size of tires you're planning to use, let's say you want 28 inch tall tires...(use the same formula above for the tire diameter you plan to use)

now take the current tire diameter and divide by the ones you plan to use and multiply by the ratio of your rear gears....it should look like this:

26(current tires) / 28 (tires planning to put) = .92857142857

multiply .92857142857 X 3.55 = 3.2964 or 3.30

so this reduces your final drive ratio to about 3.30, a big difference and will make you car feel sluggish

now to find out what kind of gear you'll need to prevent your car from being sluggish do this:

take the tire diameter of the tires you want and divide by the current tire diameter and multiply by your final gear, like this

28/26 = 1.0769230769
1.0769230769 X 3.55 = ~3.82

So with 28 inch tires you'll need 3.82 gear, and since those aren't offered then round to the nearest, like 3.73s or 4.10s to get close to that number

These are the one's I have, they are all season, not just summer. These are H speed rated the one's your looking at are like V rated, the right ups for wet weather traction weren't to my liking.

And if your rims can handle it what about the 245-50-16s? Some of us out here have run them for years and have been very pleased.

They are a bit much for the stock wheels.

yea im using stock s/c wheels. im not too thrilled with aftermarkets other than american racing . the s/c wheels are staying though i do like them.

255/50/16 on all 4 corners with the sc rims.....No rubbing....Looks awesome...

I kinda want to try 255/55/16's on my next purchase. They are pretty close to stock size. There is a limited selection and they are all labled as sport truck tires. I don't see this as a problem and they are supposed to fit a 7" rim.
