DR Sizing

Alright, has anybody ever run a 275-40-17 tire on a 17 x 7.5" rim? It's pushing the limits for sure based on the 80% of the section width minus an inch (7.6" minimum recommended).

Keep in mind, this is going to be a drag radial used at the track. The selection is not very good in a 245 width tire for a 17" rim in the DR world. 245-45-17 Nitto 555R is the only option, and I've heard bad reviews about the Nittos from a launch traction perspective.

I'd like to run a Mickey Thompson ET Street DR, but my only option there would be the 275-40-17. Hence the inquiry. Anyone run something like this?

I would advise against it.

If you want a drag only setup why not just a stock fan blade with some real drag tires??

M&H makes a 28" tall DR, 275/50-17. They should fit okay on the 7.5" wheels, they have a 8.8" TW.

A 275 is 8.8" tread width? You mean, 10.8"? And I don't think that would be a good idea on a 7.5" rim.

Two of the wheels I have on my car now came with 275/40/17's on them. They showed wear in the tread (to be expected) and a LOT of wear in the sidewalls. (one was split open) I wouldn't go that wide on a 7.5" wheel.

No, I mean 8.8". The 275 is measured at the sidewall. It is a very tall tire, and would fit "okay" on a 7.5" rim since they work on an 8-9" rim.

Its 10.8". The 275 is a measurement of the tread width, not the sidewall. And if you're indicating that the measurement for the 275 is taken from sidewall to sidewall (as opposed to the width of the tread) it would be even wider, not narrower. And a 275/40 is not that tall a tire. It is actually shorter (overall) than the 225/60/16 that is standard.

The 275/40 tire is just too wide for a 7.5" wide wheel. I wish it could be done, I'd have them on the back of my car right now.

some guys run a 275 wide tire on our stock 6.5" wide wheels.....that being said, you would have no problem fitting 275's on a 7.5" wide rim.

Being able to put it on the wheel, and doing it safely are often two different things. I could probably get a 275 to fit, but I wouldn't do it as it wouldn't be safe. IMO

DOT tires are measured at sidewall (section) width, with different heights varying the tread width quite a bit. Only drag slicks are measured at the tread.

I run a 275/40-17 on my Supra on the street, and 275/55-16 for the track. When I put them end to end, the are the exact same overall width. But the lower profile tire's tread width is wide at 10.2", and the taller tire's tread is only 8.8" wide.

Having said that, the 275/50-17 is your only option for a 17x7.5" wheel. It is 28" tall, and the aforementioned 8.8" TW. They list a 9" rim, but 8's will also work, and 7.5" is only 1" less than the TW. They hook quite well too! Here is a link so you can see for yourself!

And don't forget that the first number ONLY applies to the section width as measured on a specific width wheel which should be listed. Section width basically changes .2" per every .5" difference in wheel width.

Just my .02.
That is another reason the 275/50-17's would work pretty well, the narrow rim would suck it in a little more.

They are 28" tall though, so they would make the gearing a little taller, which also helps traction!
