Bad day for the T-Bird

My T-Bird is a second car these days, and only comes out in the warm weather. I've ust finished getting some rocker rust repaired, and have completely undersealed and wax injected the whole car. I left home in the T-Bird to go to work yesterday morning, and 5 minutes into the trip, this happened:

The woman in the shot is the person responsible.


She lauched her Fiat out of a side road as I was travelling along at about 35mph, completely oblivious to me even being there. I swerved to avoid her but couldn't. Although she'd set off from a standstill, it was quite a heavy impact. I smacked my head on the door frame, and the door is jammed shut - had to climb over the passenger side to get out. The door frame is distorted, door panel, rear wing, rocker, and the rear edge of the front wing. I am absolutely gutted.

Car's been taken away for assessment, but they think it'll be written off (dunno if that translates into US, but its uneconomic to repair, and they pay me a figure for the value, and the car becomes theirs).

I saw a a bodyshop guy today, and he thinks it IS repairable (hooray!!) so I may be after some of my good friends in the TCCOA over in the US to get me a door from a bone-yard at some point....

Good job I've just had the rust repaired in the rocker, and it still had all its strength! The car took quite an impact but I was ok.

Oh yeah, this is the car that she was driving. Barely a mark on it!!

That sucks! The amount of damage to the other car is unreal, but that is usually how it goes in this specific type of side impact, same thing happened to my 2000 Grand Marquis, torn up quarter panel and axle, and the Dodge Neon had paint that was flexed.

Gonna be tough to get it fixed over there, without easy access to parts like the door and the rocker.

Sounds like it will be written off (we also call that totaled or a total loss), not sure how that works there, here you generally can then buy the vehicle back at scrap value, and fix it and get it inspected. It will have a different title like restored or salvage, and you generally can no longer get comprehensive insurance on it, and lots of people won't buy a car with that, but an accident like that, it is mainly cosmetic and minor functional (like the door not opening) and not structural.

Ouch!

The equivalent term for your "written off" over here is "totaled". When that happens here, usually they'll pay you a certain amount for the car, then you can buy it back for usually a small fraction of that and use the difference for repairs.

As long as they can push the quarter panel out, properly repair the door jamb, repair the rocker and find a new door to go on... it should be fine. Decent doors can be had around here, but they're usually $150-$200 if someone else pulls it for you. I'd imaging shipping to UK on something that big and heavy would be unreal, probably at least as much as the door itself.

As long as the mileage isn't too high they shouldn't total it out..

Thanks guys. "Totalled". Of course. I should've known that! Sounds like it works the same over there as it does here. Trouble is there have been zero Thunderbirds sold (on Ebay) during the last few months, so I've no idea how they're going for put a value on a 20yr old import. If I wanted to get another T-bird imported (I see you have loads on the US ebay), it's gonna cost the price of the car+shipping+20% tax. We do however have a selection of 90's Mustangs on there, so I w ad thinking of convincing the assessor that that would be the best alternative as a valuation guide. They coincidentally also tend to sell for more. :-) So if it's totalled, I get a good valuation, and an age to find a door somewhere, hopefully my man can fix it up.

Thanks guys. When it happened I was absolutely gutted, and I could believe it when they said it could be written off. And then within an hour or so, the truck came, the car was gone, and I didn't think I was gonna see it again. I was really reassured when I was told by my guy the he thought it was repairable though. All my not be lost. I just hope they're not assuming that it's already theirs, and there isn't a bunch of monkeys fiddling with it while it's in their storage place. Unlike the US, this will stand out a mile in amongst all the boring euro boxes they normally see. If its not in the same state when as it was in when it left, when I get it back, I'll give them hell.

So sorry to hear this. Really sucks esp. after all the work you put into the car.

Ouch .. that is terrible.

I have a couple doors in good condition here, off a 1994 SC - same thing except for a couple pegs that would need to be ground off, and two holes for the ground effects to be filled. I cant imagine how much it would cost to ship to your side of the world though.

The door is one thing, the damage to the rear quarter and rocker is usually what totals out these cars.

Thanks, that is very useful to know. Even though the shipping would probably cost a fortune, of I get a decent payout from my insurance, I may well be interested in having your drivers door. My bodyshop guy thinks that he can make a reasonable job of repairing the rest, although it would obviously be easier if we had access to replacement panels/repair sections. The door is the main problem at the moment though, so its good to know you have one.

About my thoughts as well.

BTW, it is my understanding that "quid" is the slang term for GBP (British Pounds) - much like "bucks" is our slang term for dollars; the current exchange rate is about $1.70 per £1, so if he gets £1000-£1100, he'd get about what the car would be "worth" in the US (thank you, Doctor Who).

As for shipping a door, from what I saw in my brief search of shipping such a large, heavy item over to UK, my estimate would be around £100, if not more.

Yes, so would I! The thing is, unlike in the US, these cars are ultra rare over here. In 9yrs, I've only ever seen one on the road, and maybe 6 come up on Ebay - none on the last few months. Depending on their view, the rareness could go in my favour as I could claim that the only way to do a like for like replacement is to buy one from the US and get it shipped over. So $2000+ to buy a car + another $1500+ shipping. Alternatively I've got a list of Mustangs that have been for sale in the last few months over here, ranging from £2000 -£4000.

If I got a reasonable payout, I'd be more than willing to pay £100-300 to ship it over, although I think we'll be looking at more to do it on my own. I think there are UK companies that specialise in sourcing and shipping used car parts from the US to the UK for enthusiasts, so that's something I need to research.

And yes, "quid" = slang for pounds. Also "dosh" = slang for money, as in "it costs a lot of dosh"

That sucks. I hate stupid people.

Her rollerskate might well have quite a bit more damage than you think. The plastic bumper covers can hide a lot of damage. My sister rear-ended someone with her Mach1 quite a few years ago - no damage to the other vehicle and the only *noticeable* damage to her Mach was a busted headlight and header panel - Underneath, however, the structure of the actual bumper was damaged - pushed back about 1" and tweaked a little. Just from a little tap. When my wife wrecked her Mustang, if you looked at the car, you would think it hadn't been hit hard at all, but when you looked underneath, the bumper & core support were pushed up and back, surge tank had hit the engine (and this was a v6, not a v8).

That's mad! Appart from a slight gap where the part of the bumper / front panel meets the hood, the Mustang looks fine!

Yes, lots of issues cannot be seen. What I thought was going to be a bumper cover, headlight, and header panel on my 97 Mark VIII turned into a little bit more. The steel bumper was pushed over and up a few inches, every mount for the bumper cover, header panel, and front fender was bent a significant amount. I did make sure I got enough money from the insurance company to cover it, and since no one else would work on it...it mainly was labor (my labor) to get it all "right" (good enough).




a little (a LOT) of persuading with an engineers hammer (5 pound sledge) got it back to where everything would cover it again.

Yeah, it was nuts, and just re-enforces my belief that Japanese cars suck. That was MAYBE 25Mph, and my wife was moving across the toys direction of travel adding virtually zero force to the impact. 30 tops. I don't even want to know what would have happened to the toy in a 40MPh wreck... or head on with combined speed of say 80Mph . The ONLY damaged sheet metal on the mustang was the drivers side fender from opening the door because the whole front end got pushed over several inches.

They are not quite the same, but they are close enough that you can make it work if there is one available to you. Externally, they are the same, but the hole where the wiring goes through the door into the car is larger on the 94+ doors than on the 89-93 ones. Since you have to paint the door anyway, it wouldn't be too hard to enlarge the hole to match the size of the 94 door. Also, you will need to swap over your interior door handle since they are different on the 94+ than the 89-93, but other than that, they are the same. One thing though, try to stay away from 96/97 doors since they will have a bunch of holes in them for the body side cladding, which would have to be welded up and have a bunch of body work done to use on your 94.

That's useful to know cos as rate as these cars are over here, there's a 91 sc on Ebay for not that much more than I'd end up paying to get a door shipped over. I could use the door and rear wing panels, plus possibly a section of rocker, then sell off or scrap the rest.

One other thing about the SC door is it will have little pegs on it that the ground effects attach to that will have to be cut off and ground flat.

What kind of shape is the SC in? Might it make more sense to just replace your car with the SC? They are certainly a lot more fun to drive!

I heard from the valuer earlier. They've put a value of £2000 on the car, and for me to buy it back will be £400, so I've effectively got £1600 to repair it with.

I'm looking into either getting a door shipped over, getting a UK company to source me one, or buying this other car over here and ripping it apart.

Can anyone give me an idea of the overall dimensions (I haven't got the car at the mo) of a door and possible weight? These are the crucial numbers the courier needs.
