Cougar Emblem

Hi all,
I finally am going to get the Cougar painted and need to know how to remove the Cougar emblem on the side window quarter.

Suggestions?

1995 Lincoln Town Car Signature Series - 200k!
1994 Mercoury Cougar XR7 - 150k and still going.

You need to remove the sail panels, the emblems are held on by 3 nuts on the inside

Might be easier to leave them on. Already went down this road with new stereo system.

I will look at the service book to see how to remove the inside quarter panels.

Doing so would also give you the opportunity to remove the rear quarter windows as well. They bolt in.

This is a good thing to do, as you will want to re-seal the weatherstripping behind the window; all my Cougars leak there.

You also want to remove all the sound deadening in the unibody below the window/speaker area; it holds water, and makes it rust out.

If you are painting the car, those emblems NEED to be removed, and really the quarter glass should be too. Failure to remove these will result in paint peeling around them, and even more work and more money to fix it right. For as much work and money is involved in a complete paint job, take the time to pull everything apart and do it right.

Remove the door trim and mirror trim too, which means removing the door window channels and drilling out the rivets.

The passenger side of my car was repainted by the previous owner for some reason, and unfortunately this step was skipped and I've had to live with this...

wow.... I mean, I was going to pull all the outside lights, got a new hood, cleaned it and stripped the underside so they can color match it as well... I never thought about pulling the window trim.

I was going to pull the wiper arms, vent covers, antenna and the likes.. but wow.... that would be a nice paint job.

I will say, whoever painted this car back in 97 after it was "totaled" and fixed and sold to a dealer... (long story), the paint held up for almost 20 years. But the bumpers show the pealing. Found out there is bondo on the roof from some damage there.

It is a toss up in deciding to just buy another Cougar with less miles, better condition and deal with all of its weird problems or stay with what you know and trust. I have done so much work to this car and have a lot more to do that, what the heck. Make it look nice for another 20 years.

I have till Monday to get it ready. I will start with the easy stuff and if I have time, I will do the windows and trim. I want a nice paint job and they told me, the more you pull, the better the paint job. They did want me to get another bumper too, but it was more work to remove one from the yard and then have to pull mine as well that I figured, I will sand down the bumper if I get some time, otherwise, have them do it (a little extra cash can go far). They said about $100 extra to paint under the hood. that was a high estimate. Since I stripped it and washed off the grease and grime, all they need to do is paint it now... should be less.

Removing those emblems is not optional. If you aren't sure if you will have enough time, do that first before worrying about lights or bumpers.

No pin striping? They asked if I wanted to replace my pin stripe and I said I would do my own... see pic below I did on my Town Car.

Can't you just run a hacksaw blade behind the emblem to cut it off?

A friend of mine hated that he had them on his Town Car and scraped them off. He was much happier.

So, how do I....

I was trying to remove the quarter windows, but was concerned I would break the window trying break the seal. I used my panel clip pliers to try and lift the window away, but that did not work.

Suggestions? I was going to just have the body shop remove them since they are ready to go.

Got the hood on but the 4 torx screws on the side of the hinge to adjust the level are REALLY tight and I already broke two Torx wrenches and twisted the crap out of an impact one. I have the bolts soaking in PB Blaster and will be going out to get some more impact torx to try again.

Any suggestions on those hood screws?

Try to tighten them, then loosen them, alternating.

When they start to move, SLOWLY crank them back.

If all else fails, grind them off, and have the remainder removed (drill and tap, electro arc disintegrator, whatever).

I'd consider new bolts also.

The quarter windows still have an adhesive seal that is holding them in. If you just start at a corner and put pressure on the glass, you should be able to work them out. After the glass is out, the bead of sealant may be left on the car. Be sure to scrape/ peal that off.

The glass is robust, the best way to remove them is with a helper outside to catch them while you lie in the back seat and push them out with your feet. I've never broken them like this, done it at a junkyard a few times even without a helper.

Keep pressure on the glass, and if you can, try prying with a plastic trim tool between the glass and the center pillar. The adhesive they use is butyl, which never fully cures, so they will come out, but they will leave a mess for you to clean up when they do, and then once it is painted, you will have to get new butyl to seal them in. Don't urethane them in, or you'll never get them out again. As for the hood bolts, when I can't get those out and I need to remove the hood for some reason, I just remove the 3 8mm bolts holding the hinges to the cowl. Just make sure before you do that to dust some spray paint around them to leave a mark to make it easy to re-align the hood when you are putting it back on.

He's just trying to loosen the torx ones for height alignment though, not to take the hood off.


You really need an impact on those(not just the socket), there's thread locker in them applied from the factory IIRC

There isn't any height adjustment with those bolts, just a slight amount of front to rear adjustment, which could also be done by moving the bottom plates of the hinges. If the hood needs to come up in the back, you need shims under the hinges. If it is too high in the back, you need shims between the upper rail and the fender.

I read the manual again and you are supposed to adjust the hood via the hood hinge bolts, not the bolts that hold the hinge to the hood. My bad.

Latest and more questions

So the windows popped right off. I couple kicks (dozen?) and the bottom of the window loosened then I just kicked some more then pulled out off from the outside. I did have two loose screws holding the windows from falling out. That sealant is weird, but comes right off with a putty knife, no mess, no leftover crap... nice.

So, I can't get the door's upper trim off because the outside window weather seal blocks me from getting to the rivets that hold it in (2 I think). I can lower the back side of the weather trim, the front side that goes all the way down inside the door is not budging.

Ideas? Suggestion? Hints? Anything???

I also drilled out the rivets and found some really nice sheet metal screws to replace the rivets. I can always use rivets when I finish up after its painted.

Windsheild trim

Does anyone have an easy way of removing the windshield trim off the front window? I saw a guy that had a pair of like pliers that he used to press the clip in and the trim popped off. Harbor has the standard hook and pull tool and probably what I will go with since I can't find the pliers that guy had.

Any other suggestions?
