Question '89-'91 'Bird folks (and Cougie folks, too!)

I was playin around in the junkyard (again) this last weekend, and was specifically researching the LED panels on the backs of the cars.

We all know that the '92-up cars had the two, separate, LED panels mounted to the trunklids, but upon careful inspection, I noted that the '89-'91 trunklid panels were much thinner (like, by half) than the newer ones.

Do the early panels light up, and if so, where are the lights?

(I woulda swore that all years lit up, and that the '92 change was just for change's sake, to "freshen" the car's appearance.)

Same to the Cougar people out there -- I KNOW some of 'em light up, but which years, and how?

Thanks, up front, for any info y'all can provide...

Nope, '89-'91 only has reflectors on the trunk.

My 92 Cougar has no lights in it's reflectors.

They do however, REFLECT light when a headlight hits them - which may give the illusion that there are lights in there.

the '91-'93 are reflective, but the '94-'95 panels on my Cougar are hyper-reflective. Makes a big difference to get rid of them black lines. I do wish they lit up like a T-Bird's though.

The early 90's cougars are reflector only, however there is a large amount of space in between the casing and reflector. This month i'm actually going to put some 3 inch neons in those babies since i don't have a license for 30 days. i'll take pics when its done.

Sequentials

Has anyone ever tried - or heard of a "Sequential" conversion on an MN12? I have been "brainstorming" but doesn't seem likely with the amount of time that I don't have. Seems like a tight fit in the space between what would be the the "lens" and the back of the assembly.

Post Sequentials

Read it here first: I WILL have sequentials on my '95 LX.

The car simply looks like it was designed for it, but that the factory bean-counters nixed them because they would have added $1.72 to the cost of building each car.

I hate that, and I have ALWAYS tilted at the "reduced design" windmill. You know, sometimes you can look at something, and it's not quite right, but if ya do this or that, THEN it will be PERFECT? And the change will look "like it was there all the time" -- "like it grew there"? It's a natural.

So, I (and some people smarter than me) are screwing around with the idea right now, and still in the learning and conceptualizing stage right now -- thus the initial question.

Until I got the answers above, I thought that ALL the MN-12's had lighted LED panels, but got surprised at the junkyard over the weekend. I'm not into tearing up stuff at the junkyard that somebody else might want, so I had to ask here.

Anyway, this info is not encouraging. We've been working with busted-up '92-'97 T-Bird panels, assuming they were all the same -- and that "If we build it, they will come."

Now I'm less sure. There REALLY isn't much room to move in the "half-thickness" '89-'91 'Bird reflectors, and the Cougar panels appear to be about the same. This puts a pretty-good sized crimp in the options I've come up with. It ain't necessarily a killer, but it's a significant handicap that will require some "drawing board time."

For what it's worth, I'd be willing to bet that the person you remember talking on this subject a coupla months ago was GreenBird. See the thread in this category about removing the lens from the LED panels -- he's working with 8ate8 on getting a "pre-damaged" panel.

A while back, GreenBird explained that he hoped to begin development on the project during the first part of next year. As one of the responders, I simply mentioned that "If he built it, I would come", and added that I had an idea of my own that I was gonna play with in the meantime.

As you can see, I'm still playing with it.

But, whether they're GreenBird's, or mine, I WILL have sequential turn signals on my 'Bird!
