Clouded/Yellowed Headlamps (I've seen the article in the Tech section)

Okay Don't tell me to goto the tech section.
WHY do they turn those awful colors and get clouded?
I wanna know what causes the headlightes to do that and if I can avoid it happening so I don't have to get a bunch of grinding tools to do a fix.

Who really knows? A plastics expert?

My theory is a couple of things. First, being sandblasted by road dirt, and second, the plastic housing discoloring and showing at the seams as a result of the heat produced by the bulbs.

The yellowing on the outside is caused by UV radiation from the sun.
The sanding process described in the Tech Articles works well on that.

The headlights on my 95 have been covered almost all the time (except night)
by the black covers, and they haven't yellowed at all. They are very pitted and opaque looking now. I just finished installing 97 headlamps, and what a difference it makes for night driving.

i agree with rolling thunder on this, i have had a 90 base bird and a 93 lx and both had the yellowing headlights. I recently bought a 97 lx and noticed a huge difference in night time driving, i can actually see now.

people,
the headlights get yellow because of the UV rays in the sun. Rolling thunder is right on target. If you wax your headlights regularly it will protect them from the uv rays. I tried all the gimmicks as to sanding them, and whatever. But nothing gets them looking the way i wanted. I gave in and bought new ones. And these ones get a coat of wax everytime i wash the car.

Thanks for the tip on waxing them. Mine are yellow as all get out but they are getting replaced next year when the car gets painted and I was worried about them turning yellow again.

Your 97's are yellowed?

I remember about 5 years ago when my 92 sports headlights started showing some yellow...we talked about it on this board and everyone agreed that the 96-97's wouldn't have this problem...hehehe guess it just took a few years to show up.

Besides sanding, you can try a dab of bug/tar remover (the lotion type). It gets that film off for a week, but it still comes back.(My 96 are foggy , gonna have to get new ones)

the 96-97 lights don't yellow, the get scratched and cloudy. It's not as bad as the 89-93 or 94+95 lights, but is signifigant. I had my passenger headlight replaced (due to a corolla ) but managed to keep the headlight. I will post a pic or two of the difference later this week.

I know, I know. You veteran guys are rolling your eyes and thinking that "geesh, these darn noobs need to be slapped" but,.....

I have sanded and resanded and waxed my lenses. The outer surface looks wonderful. However, I do believe that heat in the housing causes the yellowing around the edges at the joint of the housing and lens. No amount of sanding, rubbing, and waxing will remove this. And it's not only the edge, but right within the housing itself.

The opera lights in the interior yellow and burn the plastic. The brake light housing plastic yellows and melts. The headlamps are giving off a lot of heat. Think that maybe there is a problem with the quality of plastic used in our birds? Maybe they changed it for the 96-97 production?

My hypothesis (sp?).

no your totaly right though. Wet sanding will help out alot, but around all of the seems is where mine was the worst. The middle of the lense looked great, but as you got closer and closer to the edges it looked yellowed still. I know for a fact that the inside surface was yellow as well, but not nearly as bad as the outside.

I used to clean them once every two weeks...but it got to be too much for me. Since the edges were yellow anyways I just broke down and bought an aftermarket set to the tune of $150. The front end of the car looks 100 times better now. I had seriously forgotten how they looked before the yellowing started.

Yeah, I know. It's not really a 4by.
Maybe in the spring (ha ha - spring/springs ) something will be done about that. Winter's here and the Yokohamas are going back on.

It's not just a Ford thing. I have also seen in on Neons, and my wife's Grand Cherokee to a certain extent.

You have to admit though that almost all of the 92-96 Escort that you see running around have yellowed almost to the point that they are just about opaque. I don't know how some of those folks can see at night.

It's called plastic and mr UV rays from the sun do that. The epoxy they use around the edges is especially (sp?) sensitive to it. As said above you can't bash ford, almost all cars do this even toyotas.
