Hood release failure

For future reference, is there a non-destructive method for opening the hood in the event of a failure of the under dash release handle?

Haven't heard of that happening, but I was able to open the hood on my 93 Cougar by reaching from under the bumper to the latch box. There's a vertical piece of metal I had to push left or right extremely hard, and it opened. Never was really useful. Nice to know, I guess.

Celica and Chevy 1500 are sold for parts. Now I'm left with the broken Buick and my '98 Dakota.
