Rear hood pins??

One of the back hinges of my Legendary hood broke out just weeks after I had it installed... Legendary never returned my calls... never offered a solution to the problem... I never heard a word from them... so eventually I did my best to glue the metal backing plate back to what was left of the fiberglass... it didn't stay together very long... but still held the hood somewhat in place and hinged.

Now it has completely broke again... and I want to find a lasting solution to the problems with this inferior product. What options do I have to attach the rear portion of the hood... I've considered drilling holes down through the hood and bolting the hood to the hinge vertically... I have also consider removing the hinge all together and possibly putting hood pins through the back of the hood also... any advice? ...suggestions? ...experience?

John Jackson did the pins in the back of the hood, didn't look too bad.

Is it likely that I would need to add bump stops also?? I've actually gone without front pins for two or three years now... just bought some and plan to install those soon... now the hinge broke off... so it might be difficult getting the right alignment for the pins.

You know, I didn't think to look for those, sorry. If you can get it so the hood rests in the back without needing to be lifted and put the pins through where they are far enough down to keep it from moving much, I assume you could get away without bumpstops, but if you are going to be drilling holes anyway, might as well make two more somewhere close by.

Good advice... I already have a rattle from the loose (well... now missing) hinge... the hood should lay on the cowl... but bump stops might help minimize vibrations... now... all need is the ambition to do the work... lol!

Anybody have ideas for repairing the hinge portion of my hood? The metal backing broke out of the fiberglass... so the fiberglass on the bottom would need to be rebuilt...

I did fix it with a small amount of success using JB weld... but I'm interested in trying to rebuild the fiberglass itself.

Get a fiberglass repair kit. Or go to a boat shop and get what you need. 1 quart of resin should be enough. Thin, finely woven cloth would work better than mat.

You will need to remove the hood and lay it upside down. Grind away some of the glass around the hinge area and layer sheets of glass over it. Go way past the repair area to gain strength. Make sure the metal backing is lined up correctly, that might be tricky. You might have to slot the boltholes in the hinge when done. Put some old bolts in the backing and take them out before the resin fully sets. Messy, messy work, wear gloves. Might not be a good first time project with fiberglass.

Yeah, fiberglass repair really isn't hard at all. Get some resin and fiberglass mat, and then grind down some beneath where the hinge sits and position the hinge then lay a few layers of fiberglass over it. Just remember to alternate mat, resin, mat, resin, etc. and make sure that the mat is soaked with resin before putting another layer on. Once you are done, you shouldn't have any more problems with the hinge breaking off.

Thanks for the advice!

I drove for one day with the broken hood... got to work... out of paranoia opened the hood to check the security of the latch... and when I tried to shut the hood it would not latch... so I went down the street to Lowe's bought about 4' foot of rope... tied it to the engine brace... ran it through the mach 1 hood scoop and secured it to the cougar grill... that and the safety latch was good to make it home.

I started drilling the holes for hood pins... then discovered that the pins were too short to go through the radiator support... not only that... but the locking pins (ordered from summit racing) were totally incapatible with my hood... so back to the drawing board... errr... parts store.

Being that it was 10:30 the project was on hold until morning...

I was working noon to 8:00... so I had a relatively small window... using a borrowed vehicle... I made my way to autozone... found a set of pins... still too short to go through the radiator support... but I was out of other options and would have to improvise... my idea was to spot weld two of the nuts provided with the kit to the radiator support... only problem, since I'm new to the area, I had no idea where to get the welding done...

After stopping in at a garage... they offered to do it for 20 - 30 dollars!! I wasn't impressed... so I called my roommate... a guy with many connections... he told me of a fab shop his friend worked at about a mile from his place... so I finished the prep work... tied the hood and headed out the road.

Good thing I had the hood tied securely... because a passing dump truck tested my knots by lifting the hood in a most unsettling way... whew! The welding took about 2 minutes tops... I was charged two dollar for thier trouble and on my way!

The hood pins look great... I'm a bit uncomfortable without the hood latch... (removed... as it made alignment to the pins just about impossible... perhaps fixing the hinge might fix that problem?) all it would take is some idiot to pull the pins... or worse my engine compartment is vulnerable to theft...

So... any ideas on how to secure the hood and engine compartment without a latch? I'm considering welding a bolt across the latch reciever on the hood... then having a foot long cable to clip from that to the radiator support... but that still would stop people from accessing the engine area...

Btw... do you think it is worth my effort trying to get summit to take those 'universal' locking hood pins back? Or should I just take the $35 loss?? It burns me that all my car projects must go over time and over budget... every single time!!!

Do you really think someone is going to steal your engine? I have just hood pins holding the hood on my 94, and it isn't going anywhere. Plus people aren't going to know that you don't have a latch, so they won't try to open the hood to steal something from under there. I say just keep the regular pins on it and don't worry about it.

It's not the entire engine I'm worried about... just stuff that could be easily taken off... but you're right I probably have nothing to worry about.

btw... I knew a guy with a nice foxbody mustang with a fiberglass hood secured with pins... someone pulled his pins... he drove off without noticing the missing pins... smashed his windshield, creased the roof and the hood broke from the hinges... that is what I'm paranoid about.
