Legally changing the paint

What legal steps are necessary for changing the finish of a car? My guess is it depends on the state, and Google doesn't help at all.

Thanks

The paint? If you're having a paint shop do the job, I've never heard of any guidelines for what you can/can't do as far as color goes.

a black car.

thats a dmv question you obviously didnt get right...

Do you need to report to the dmv when:
a) changing the vehicles paint
b) changing underwear
c) changing ownership

Oh, ok. I just figured that since there's a spot on the title for color there might be some legal proceeding you must follow when changing the color.

I've never heard of having to inform the Department of Transportation or anything after painting one and my father is a bodyman. Basically so long as you don't alter the vin or anything it should be fine.

Umm.. pardon my french but... real life situation here...

Cop pulls you over for doing 125 in a 60. He is already mad at you. He looks at your papers, and sees that you car is orange on the paper, but it's now purple. He then get madder at you cause you papers are now false and you can be charged for that. So instead of getting a ticket for speeding, you are going to get one for false papers, or something like that.

Do yourself a favour and get the papers updated.

There's a space for color? There is no space to indicate color on a KS title or registration.

That's pretty silly. If your doing 125 / 60 your going to have a fistful of tickets and he's going to be to busy writing them to give a chit what color the reg says the car is. A clerical error on your registration concerning the color is the least of your problems in this "real life" situation. lol

My '89 was titled in FL for about 14 of it's 15 years on the road. It was Light Titanium Frost (metallic tan). the FL title has always listed the color as Silver (Sil) which it obviously was not. I live in a town with to many cops and to little crime. All the times they pulled me over on fishing expeditions (which always resulted in me driving away ticket free after some polite verbal sparring and refusing to let them search my car) not one ever gave a crap what color the reg said vs the real color. Not one. That's a real life situation for you.

Maybe it's those Canadian cops your used to dealing with? I dunno...

In Texas you do have to change it. If the cops get behind you and run your plates and it says green but the car he is looking at is red you will get a ticket. Not only that but you will be pulled out at gun point and sit in the back of a cop car till everything is worked out to make sure you didnt just switch plates on a stolen car. Dont ask how I know.

Well I'll chalk that up as one more reason to be glad I don't live in the great state of texas. lol

If that was the case down here I should have been yanked out of my old cougar at gun point by the local PD at least a dozen times during the four years I owned it.
