What should I drive to NJ?

Well I got to thinking, I'm going to be driving up to NJ in july to visit friends and family and I've found I have a choice between 2 cars, the thunderbird or the 442. Its about 500 miles.

I was originally going to drive the thunderbird cause of the gas milage, the A/C would be another plus too, and its a very nice ride, plus cruise control.

Or I can take the 442, yea I know the 3.73 gearing wouldn't be nice but I do have a 2.73 geared rear end and since I'm rebuilding my suspension I can swap it in easily and when I get home I can put the 3.73 right back in. The 442 won't get as good gas milage but it shouldn't be to bad with the 2.73 geared. A/C isn't a big issue, I drove this car through 5 summers, the windows and vents do the job. No cruise control either, not really a big deal either. Plus I'm going to be running a electric fan. The main reason I'm thinking about it cause I would like to hit up all the car shows and hang with my old car buddies with my car.

I'm still kinda up in the air about it, the thunderbird would be cheaper and do the job fine, but the 442 would be cooler and I get to show it off to my car buddies

Swap the trans to a 700R4, which has overdrive and can be had for around $2-300. Even with the 2.73s you are going to be revving that car pretty high to keep up with traffic on the highway, and over a 600 mile drive, that is not only going to cost more in gas, but it will be hell on your engine. On the other hand, with overdrive and 3.73s, you should be able to cruise at 75-80mph while still keeping the engine under or near 2500rpms.

My thoughts are any problems you may have with your Olds and any chance of an accident/damage. I bet you'd be more devastated if something happened to your Olds than your Bird.

I've been of the same opinion when driving my 73 Cougar. I've made one trip from NJ to AL (900 miles) when I picked up the car, and then another round trip (1800+ miles) from AL to NJ to go to a car show/parade. I was paranoid about it getting “tagged” especially in the DC area.

My 351C-4V got 18 mpg with the C6 and 2.75 gears, so the 442 shouldn't be “too bad” with 2.73's, probably somewhere in the 15 to 18 mpg range as long as you keep your foot out of it.

But here's something to think about: I drove up to NJ in July..... with the top up or down I broiled!!! So that A/C might be the deciding factor. Sitting in a traffic jam in 90 degree weather with no A/C is not fun at all.

It's a tough call. The MN12's are SO nice and comfortable, but I’m sure your 442 is a lot more fun to drive. Since it is in July, I would recommend the MN12. If it was Fall or Spring, I would recommend the 442.

But just my ramblings.

It just snowed like 6 inches here. I can't even begin to think of hot.

Well she isn't to bad on gas, she gets a average 15mpg with 3.73 and I got 18mpg on the hiway at 70mph. So I'm hoping 20-22 wouldn't be out of the question. The tranny swap is out of the question with my current budget, I'll have enough to get the TH350 rebuilt. Another thing is I drove the 442 daily for 5 years with no issues really and I have a little more faith it in, not that I don't think the thunderbird won't get me there and back easily

You should swap to a 700R4 instead of rebuilding the TH350. That would be cheaper, and make the car more reliable and more usable.
