Angry My mark caught on fire.

I was driving home last night and I smelled something burning through the vents, then I noticed smoke coming out of the hood. I stopped the car and popped the hood. A lot of smoke was coming out but I could not tell where from. I went back in the car,my two year old son was in the car, that's when I noticed flames creeping up from behind the engine area. I grabbed my son and called the fire dept. A couple of guys were walking by and noticed the fire and threw snow on fire. It seems like the wires caught fire around the drivers side of the engine near the firewall.
Has anyone heard of this happening before? are marks known for having electrical problems?

Sorry to hear about the fire - you've got the BEST Mark ever made IMHO!

So what's the damage?

Sounds like a freak thing, do you have any added power cables running through that area that may have shorted out?

Sorry to hear it man. I had my old Grand Marquis catch fire, suspected a faulty filter that leaked gas onto the manifold. The insurance investigator never could find out for sure. Really sucks when it happens. Hope it isnt too bad.

The damage as far as I can tell is the wiring next to the master cylinder and the pvc valve, did I say that right? I'm waiting on the insurance now to see what they say. I have an appt. on Tuesday afternoon so I'll know then.

The adjuster came by today to see the car. He told me that I have to have a mechanic look at it and tell me the extent of my damage. So far as I can tell it's just wires, but my mechanic told me that it should have been totalled, because we don't know what caused the fire.

Thats BS, if its just the wiring odds are it was just a short in those wires.

The insurance called and said they are not covering the damage. The dealer is now going to look at it and tell me the cost. I'm looking at the engine wiring harness at least.

****ty deal, when my insurance company said they werent goin to cover me I raised hell with them and won.

You may be better off buying the harness yourself off ebay or from a wrecker then have the dealer install it. A new one from Ford plus the dealer markup is gonna be insanely expensive.

My best friend had a Mark VII and his wife was driving it one day. She was stopped at a redlight when she also noticed smoke coming from the heater vents and from under the hood. She tried to unlock the doors but the power locks were inop because of the rapidly spreading fire. She then tried to roll down the windows with the power switch, but again, nothing worked. By now the car was really starting to fill with smoke. She panicked and couldn't get out of the car. Fortunately a couple guys walking by noticed and broke the glass out of the door and pulled her and her 2 sons from the car.
It didn't help that the inner door handle was missing on the driver's door, preventing her from getting out. My buddy took the car to a dealer and they couldn't tell him what started the fire. He just junked the car and bought a truck to replace it.
My buddy's wife was damned lucky if you ask me.

Did they say why they wouldn't cover it? I know I have fire, theft vandalism and glass coverage on both my cars, and if my t/c had burnt up when it caught fire and insurance didn't cover it, I'd have raised hell even though the car is 20 and not in the best of health. I lucked out though and only needed a valve cover gasket

I think I'm getting the same problem . . .

Today I noticed a slight buning smell coming from mine when I parked at a library. I got out and inspected, there was a light smoke coming out from under the hood from behind the driver's side of the engine. The smell only comes from the area around the master cylinder. I don't see/feel any burnt wires, and the car isn't acting funny (yet), so I don't know WTF it is. It's parked for now until I can really investigate.

Found out yesterday that it was my wiper motor that caused a short. The motor went and burned something else and caused a short. That's what the service tech at LM told me.

"In an article on www.cnn.com today, it was announced that it is now believed that the cruise control switch problem causing the fires is now installed in as late as 2003 Expeditions. The following is information taken from that article:

"Expanded investigation
The $20.57 switch shuts off the cruise control when the driver firmly steps on the brakes. The switch is located under the hood of the vehicle and is attached to the brake master cylinder on one end and wired to the cruise control on the other.
On most of its models, Ford designed the switch to be powered -- or "hot" -- at all times, even when the vehicle is off and the key is removed from the ignition.
Inside the switch, a thin film barrier separates brake fluid from the switch's electrical components. Investigators say fires can occur when the film cracks and brake fluid from the master cylinder seeps into the electrical side of the switch.
Ford has already recalled more than 1 million vehicles in two separate recalls to replace the switch.
The first recall was in May 1999, affecting 279,000 Crown Victorias, Grand Marquises and Town Cars for model years 1992 and 1993. The second, issued in January 2005, affected 792,000 vehicles, including model year 2001 F-Series SuperCrews and 2000 Expeditions, Navigators and F-150 pickups.
But a Ford document obtained by CNN shows the same or similar switch was installed in a total of 16 million vehicles, far beyond what was recalled. Those vehicles include:

Taurus/Sable and Taurus SHO 2.3 L 1993-1995
Econoline 1992-2003
F-Series 1993-2003
Windstar 1994-2003
Explorer without IVD 1995-2003
Explorer Sport/Sport Trac 2002-2003

Ranger 1995-2003"

Mine has a vacuum line coming through the firewall to the brake pedal, so when you press the brake, it releases the vacuum in the cruise diaphram. I think it also uses the BOO switch for input.

I was just searching for this same information. I saw the story on CNN yesterday and was wondering if my bird was affected. I do not have the switch on the master cylinder they taked about in the story, I believe mine is vaccum controlled, but not sure if there is something that is still powered all the time.

Anyone know how to remove or disable the CC with out having to pay the insane dealer prices, is it necessary on a 95 T-Bird?

As near as I can tell from looking at the service manual and my car, the only electrical parts attached tot eh booster/Master cylander are the fluid level switch and the ABS Pedal travel switch, which doesn't appear to have ANY connection to the Cruise control module at all... I'll have to go look at the windstar tomorrow...

Lincoln Mark VIIs

1984-1989 Lincoln Mark VIIs are known to have ignition switches that melt down and catch fire.
