looking at getting a cougar

well,This Red cougar has been sitting down the street from me for around 5-6 months. Last time I looked there was an 800.00 price on it, but now theres no markings. So maybe the guy who owns the car will go down. Its currently sitting out side a local car shop, but the guy helps people sell their cars.

Info on the car:
red 91-93(5.0 HO)
Interrior is kinda beatup, no radio, grey vinyl matereal
few small rust spots here or there
Busted out drivers side cornerlamp/headlight
missing the grill(stolen I assume)
miles-my guess the lower 100K(cant tell too well on the odometer)
has the 6? or 8m spoke cougar wheels taht people say are so rare
No cracked or broken glass
it drives atleast, but it said no REV on the windshield, so I guess it dosent have reverse. Not sure havent really talked to the guy yet
Disk brake in front, drums in rear

i'm going to stop by tomm afternoon, see if I can find some info on the car, and possibly see waht they want for it. I'm thinking a good offer is in the 500ish range, does this seem fair for what I described? I'm hoping I can get this for a beater, so I can focus on getting my tbird fixed, and not worry about messing up my car till i get it fixed. So any advice before I start looking? I've never bought a car before, my parents just kinda supprised me with the thunderbird after i looked at a few Probes(Decided not to cause of HG's...go figure) and a 96 V6 stang, so any tips on getting a car would be greatly appreciated.

500 sounds like a good price. But if the tranny is shot can you do it yourself? If not that could be an expensive fix for a shop.
