new car ideas?

I have ruled out a truck or suv as my next possible purchase, as they just hold their value too well and I wont be able to come up with enough cash.

I am looking to spend around $3000.

I love my cougar, but at ~21mpg highway, she has to go. I am also finding it rather annoying how long the car is, dificult to park in my apt buildings parking lot(if it can even be called a lot). So new car needs to be shorter, better gas mileage, accomidate a nice stereo, and needs to have a nice interior(i travel long distances). Power and performance is not that big of a deal, not near as much as reliability.

Anyone have any suggestions? I also would like to keep with cars I have somewhat of an idea how to work on, like ford, chevy, gm, etc. If I can find something still a little sporty, that would be great. I dont really want to be driving around a toyota camery.

The '91-'96 Escort GT (2 door), especially the '95-'96. Or, it's sister car the Tracer LTS (4 door). I have a '91 LTS. The base Escort/Tracers of these years have a 1.9L SOHC engine. Not very peppy. But the GT's and LTS's have a 1.8L DOHC engine built by Mazda. With a 5 speed they are quite peppy, and you'll get 28 mpg +! My Tracer LTS is fully loaded. p/s, p/b, p/win., p/mirr., p/drlcks., cruise, tilt, ac., rear win. def., 4 wheel disks w/antilock, am/fm cass. premium sound system, and more with a 5 speed. Take a look at them, and there cheap.

Sounds like you need/want a Camary or Contour.

If all else fails get a bigger hammer!

I had a '95 SE. It's between the base and GT model. Nice car. The GT's really fly with a stick, but are a bit sluggish with an auto. The base and SE's use a DOHC mazda 4 banger. The GT's have a V6. If you look at one, Look at an SE. With good rubber, they corner like you're on rails, but they do have a stiff ride. If you're going to drive for any distance it may get a little tiresome. You can get them pretty much loaded too. Mine was. For gas milage, I think I use to get around 26-27 mpg on the highway.

I forgot one very important thing! There was a big problem with some of the automatics. They seem to be an oddball for some reason. My trans. went and it was going to cost me over $2,300.00 to get it fixed! Yes!, 2,300.00. You may want to steer clear or do a lot of homework on the one you look at.

I bought Blizzak WS-50's and had them on all four. Being front wheel drive, it faired about as well as one would. Snow traction was ok, but I'm a steel stud person, I felt the ice traction was not up to par for me. But that's just me!

Yeah I had a 93 5-speed. Black on black and it was "sexy" as my wife called it. No power but good gas mileage. The exhaust was VERY expensive. For the pipes from cat back were $420 at cost from a friend of mine that owned a muffler shop. Showed me in the book.

I'm thinking a 95-98 v6 stang. If you look around enough, you can find them for a decent price. My sister has a 2000 with an automatic and she tells me she averages about 25-26 mpg. Small, sporty, usually pretty reliable and parts are fairly inexpensive. oh, they're also a dime a dozen.

I thought about a mustang. I dont think for $3000 I could find one in as good as condition as my cougar is though. If I found a nice one that wasnt beat on too bad, though, Id go for it.

I bought my 96 GT for $4300. It's in pretty good shape, the only thing about it is that it has a rebuilt title because it was a theft recovery. If you look hard enough, you can usually find a pretty good deal. Insurance can get kinda high though, mine is $990 per 6 months through State Farm. I am 19 and have one ticket that will be three years ago in April, although, my car is a GT, so it would naturally be a little higher.

I had a 94GT. It got about 26MPG, and I drove city/highway mix. Anyway, they are a nice car. Corners like a pro, good Acceleration, with a 5speed. Sunroofs are nice on em, so is the rear wiper. Has alot of aftermarket parts for it. Lots of room, can get good sound in it. I reccomend trying one out. If you can, Get the Probe GTS. they were 97 only, and featured power everything, leather, spoiler, moonroof. I saw a Couple GTS around here for 3k. But, if you cant, get a plain GT, its the same engine as the GTS

I get around 22 mpg average with mine. More driving state routes than highways (55 speedlimits). I took a trip up to Lima to get a set of rims for it, drove 80 almost the whole way and still averaged 24 mpg. I went to Cleveland a few weeks ago and averaged 27 mpg round trip driving about 75. I know it did even better than the average on the way up. My car is a 96 with the 248-A package, basically a GTS with a 4.6 instead of a 5.0.
