hummvee

ive found an old hummer for around 4,000 smackaroos it still runs good and the tranny is in decent shape, but i was jsut wondering if anyone on this board has had any experience with these beasts. i think it would be a kick but toy to have around and it already has a lif and tiers (its only a 4 inch but it a hummer) hehe it looks like it would be an awsome truck to have but its the military car so there for the intertio.... what intrtior oh well i was jsut wonderin what u guy thought. i would keep my cougar cuz i got to have something with gas milage.

well i can tell you that i drove one for 7 months straight while i was in iraq, and the things are beasts, im sure the one you are refering to is an a-1 however, i drove the a-2 and i cant imagine ever driving the a-1 agian, EVERYTHING is different and i mean everything, the a-2 is much smoother running, butter suspension, better turning radius, better tranny, it was jsut much better. But if you are going to jsut use it for a toy, it will be fine, and fun. when i went through gunner school we had to get our license for them, and we drove a course for about 4 hrs, through streams, creeks, ditches, jumping them, going up and down INSANE hills, needless to say i learned alot that day, not only about the hummer either, and it was no holds bar, the instructer got in and said have fun, but dont kill me somewhere around here i got pics, i had a bunch on my old computer, but some jackass broke into my house and took everything when i was in Iraq, but i thik i still have a few saved on a disk somewhere, ill have to check, but when you can drive through water, and the water comes up to the steering wheel, theres no other experience like that, lol. may not be the fastest or most HP, but i can pretty solidly bet that no one around you will be able to go through the same **** as you!!!! So all in all if you got the money, go for it.

No kidding. I've heard tales from Hummer meets where one got driven off of a very steep grade, hit a bunch of trees, rocks, all sorts of other junk. The only thing that needs replaced was a u-joint. Pretty impressive.

You mean this? There's my buddy standing in the sunroof / gun turret. 3k miles, 1984. I think it has a 6.3L Turbo... I would have to ask my father, bc it is his fun truck. Very cool... excellent off-road capability.

I worked on those things for 2 1/2 years in Ft Hood. I have never changed so many parts for so little vehicles in my life. Starters, and Air Filters galore!! Plus, if you ever need any parts, be prepared to pay out the behind, unless you've got friends in the motorpool. Plus the 6.2 diesel isn't exactly a powerhouse...150HP max...and its been worn pretty well if its for sale already. But you will always find people who can tell you anything about them (me) and if i can't find out I'll just make a few calls and get my hands on a TM and get what you need.

And if anyone can get me a CDR valve for a 6.2 diesel, that would be great, Autozone just looks at me stupid and the dealer has no clue what i'm talking about. I got my last one when i went back on base to see some old buddys and the Motor Sgt gave me one....but that was a couple years ago and no one i know is there anymore.

But 4000 for a running military HMMWV is pretty good considering DRMO never wants to sell running vehicles let alone complete ones. If you do get it you will never regret it in the end. Going places your friends can't is always priceless!!!

haha thanks for the responses guys for all the comments.. but i seem to have a delma my father is saying that if i want this truck then ill have to get rid of the cougar.... now if you know me the hummer has been my dream car for years (i knew i had some redneck in me) but my cougar was and still is my first love. so im going to do a pros and cons list.

hummer my dream car - cougar my first love
hummer sweet truck - cougar sweet car
hummer desil truck - cougar v8
hummer around 15 mpg on highway - cougar around 25
hummer can go through anything - cougar was been hit by truck and still rans great (fixed it)
hummer demands respect - cougar gains respect (except by a few who are stuck on grandma car)
hummer truck - cougar car
hummer most likley highmatinence- cougar not high matience
hummer been in a war - cougar .... been in a garage

hmm well if any of u guys have any more things to add to this list then do so i dont want to lose my cougar but the hummer has been my dream since i was 12 (yha i know 5 years isnt a long time) but im going to go do a through inspection of this car in the next few days and if its in good shape then ill consider it, oh and insurance / gas milage will have a big impact on my choice

15mpg highway? I think your being abit optimistic...

Tires- cougar much cheaper
Maintainance- Cougar much cheaper
I'd bet the cougar will be cheaper on insurance as well.
Parking- look at the length of the vehicles and thier turning radius.

the humvee, being an ex-military vehicle, probably doens't have a title attached to it so paperwork and inspections will be hell. And yes 15mpg is pretty high....my 86 Suburban with the 6.2 got 17 on the highway...probably can't squeeze more than 12 or 13 in the city. The humvee will be worse with the 1:1 ratio hubs at the wheels. Is the humvee still 24V or has it been converted to 12V. Thats a big problem with old military vehicles. But the big question is What do you Want?
