Workin' for THE MAN!

I am now a federal employee! I just got hired in at TARDEC as an Engineering Technician. It's a summer internship, so it's not permanent, but it is full-time, and I will be starting at $11.27 an hour! For comparison, I was making $8 an hour working at the service desk at K-Mart, and that's after 2 years. And since it's full-time, I'll be making about double what I pulled in at K-Mart. Should I wear a suit on my first day, or is a shirt and tie fine? I've never had a "real job" before.

Congrats and welcome to Gov't employment.

My suggestion for the clothing, I would wear a regular suit... you can always take off the jacket and just go shirt and tie once you’re there. Then get the feel of what everyone else is wearing and go from there.

And a simple suggestion: Listen to those doing the work! In my experience there are two groups of people in Gov’t employment: Those that do 90% of the work and are usually too busy to really spend a lot of time with new employees. And those that “say” they are busy, but will have plenty of time to help “show you the ropes”. You can guess which ones you should listen to and learn from.

Be polite and don’t have a “I know this” attitude even if you do know it. Listen to those people that have been doing the job for years.

Good luck!!

I'm definitely not the kind of guy to have the "know-it-all" attitude, except for the rare occasions that I do. I'll be keeping my eyes and ears open and learning as much as I can. After all, that's what internships are for, right? And I want to come back next year, too! My mom works at the same building, but for TACOM. I've heard plenty of stories about the 10% people. I'll try to stick with the people who are actually getting things done.

Thanks for the advice!

These people are usually called "managers" even though they know nothing about what it is they are supposed to be managing. They can also be identified by the fact they consider scheduling/attending 4 two hour meetings a day to be real work.

What he said again. Be prepared to do some grunt work, summer interns usually get the jobs no one else wants around here.

Exactly what I was thinking.... I just didn't put it in print....

Yeah and I'll second the "grunt work". Put some overalls in the car so you don't trash your clothes if you have to do some manual labor.
