Help!!!!

For some stroke of unluckiness, I got pulled over today. But its wierd.... I was passing a car not doing the speed limit, and I pulled infront of him. There happened to be a cop watching. Now I didnt know I couldnt pass there. It was a middle lane thats stretches about a mile used for turning. I see cars use it all the time. INCLUDING OFFICERS. what would be the best way to contest this?

Were the lines yellow?
If the lines on your side were white and broken, you may be OK. If they were all yellow (which many turning lanes are), you may be boned.

the lines are not solid yellow. They are those reflector dots. But they are broken lines, which is why I thought it was OK to pass there

I think you may be boned on this one.
I would imagine the law for that particular lane would restrict it for turns only, and not for passing. I've gotten a ticket for passing in a no-passing zone before, so I've looked into this. Some of the laws are pretty precise.
You may even want to grab one of those free driving booklets they have at your local DMV to verify some of this stuff.
