Question MN12's For Sale... Why So Many?

Is it just me, or does it seems like an awful lot of people on here are selling their cars? It seems like not a day goes by that someone is not listing a car for sale. It is the economy? Is it the fuel prices? Lack of interest/boredom? I was just wondering why….

Especially considering my Cougar will soon be for sale… again…(I need to complete some R&D for a vendor first)…

These cars are getting old and I have a feeling some are losing interest. I am not surprised to be honest.

I believe it to be a combination of the economy, fuel prices &
the fact that the MN12s are any where between 8 to 16 years old.

Vehicles that old generally need "fixing-up",
mechanical, suspension, electrical, cosmetic, cooling (radiator and/or heater core), ect.,
and even if the vehicle does not need any of those things right now, it probably would soon.

Most people would rather put $500.00 to $2000.00 down/toward a newer, lower mileage vehicle
rather than fixing up an older, high mileage vehicle.

I've been debating for a good long while now as to repair it with the new parts or parting it out and putting the brakes/sway bars/tires/wheels on my Mark VIII. With 6 vehicles the total insurance is killing me (In AL, you have to have liability on every vehicle you have registered whether it is drivable or not ).

So when I factor in the price of a paint job, engine/tranny swap (I have almost everything for DOHC/T-45 swap), I’m looking at a few grand.

So the 94 T’Bird will get parted out on eBay over the next few months, and the 95 Cougar will be for sale again in about 3 weeks after I complete the R&D.

I know on ebay, I can hardly find anything but 3.8's and the bosonian editions. If I could find a cheap 96/97 MN-12 with a 4.6, I'd be all over it (I take the 4.6 and I'll give the little bro my 3.8).

As for why, I think some of it's a misture of everything 94DD said. The economy, fuel prices, age (one of the bigger ones), and a loss of interest. I know mine's not going anywhere until at least 2009.

When I first came here, it seemed like most of the people were fanatics about the MN12 chassis. But, now that I've been here for a while, I realize that most of the posters here really want something different, but the MN12 was the best they could afford at the time.

So, having said that, I think all of the reasons posted are probably correct. The MN12 is falling into that dreaded no-man's-land of being too old to be new, and too new to be antique.

Night was dark, but the sky was blue,
Down the alley, the ice-wagon flew,
Heard a bump, and somebody screamed,
You should have heard just what I seen.

There's a lot of fanatics still here. I'll keep working on my car until either it's stolen, I total it or I can't get parts for it.

It's my daily driver that I put 134 miles on a day. It also serves as occasional family vehicle. And this time next year when my Mother-In-Law gets a new car, I'll be adding her blue 97 to the driveway to replace my 94 Exploder.

the problem i have been seeign is that the used car market has so gone to s.hit with 0% and the family pricing stuff that good used cars alot of times are ending up in junk yards . the cars i have seen latley should not of been there . 1 that comes to mind is a pristine 93 s/c white, grey leather. perfect interior, nice body, yea i didnt know aboutthe drivetrian , but itwas all there besides the wheels. showed 100k on it. another 96 v8 lx had a 190k but was a nice looking car and it was all there too . and it started right up ! so it hurtsto seethesecars going out like that. and most people treat them like trash .

Exactly what I was thinking. I love my car and would never sell it (wouldnt get anything for it and it's already paid for? Why the hell should I get rid of it) Especially mine being a 3.8, which I resent I'd never get anything for it. I choose to keep it though and fix it up more. Now that i have another car to drive, the Tbird sits in the yard with a cover on it most of the time. So when I do finally take it out, I appreciate it more. I'd hate to be one of those old guys who regrets selling a car of their youth hood. These cars may eventually become classics, especially the SC's but who knows. I'm waitin a couple years and I'm gonna get me one of those super six packages, and a new paint job!

Thats why I always laugh at my buddy, I dont owe payments on mine, my insurance is about $900 cheaper for the year. Hell anyone thats ever driven the Cougar thinks its a blast to rip around in. And when Im done school and get that all paid off and the if the 3.8 ever kicks over Ive got an ol' 302 sittin in the garage just waiting for some new parts.

And like I said with the odometer at almost 352,000 nobody would even look at it. This is one car I know I would regret selling. My buddy who now has a 2000 Monte Carlo SS still wishes he'd kept his Mirada.

I love the MN12 platform as I feel it is one of the most balanced cars that was ever offered. Yes, it has it's shortcomings, but what car doesn't. The only reason I'm getting rid of mine are that I'll still have the LSC (which I consider the "Big Brother" to the MN12) and it is a far better car (condition wise) than either of my MN12's.

I was thinking the other day, what would I buy if I lost my Bird. My slow brain left me thinking for over an hour about this. I could not think of anything but another Bird, and then I had trouble thinking of which year and model. I just can't see myself in anything but a Thunderbird or Cougar. Maybe a Mark, but those are a pain to find not pimped out or f'ed up.

I've got 2 birds now. 1997 daily driver, and the 1990 SC project. I'm NOT selling either of them.

Hell I told my wife that when her Chubby Lumina dies, I'd get her a bird as well.....I mean a car seat fits VERY nicely in the back of mine....

I have been on and off wanted to sell my 94. My whole deal with it is that if I sell my bird and my DD (97 contour), I would have enough money to make a nice dwn payment on a new car with less miles. I love my bird but sometimes I think it's time to move on. I know I won't get much for my bird because it's a salvage title but I'm not looking to get much out of it. It's been a great car and still is a great car. Plus I have my husbands truck that we can take to shows. The down side of selling it is I have had this car for almost 12 years and it does have a lot of sentimal value and a lot of memories. I'm just trying to determine if I do sell it will I regret it when something comes up that I wish it was there for. I've been doing a lot of thinking and I will probaley do a lot more. I would like to see if anyone would be intrested in it. I would like to know if it would really sell.

Garage
Interesting question. I think it is mostly age and mileage. Most people don't want to make the investment to rebuild one as I have. It is easier to get a car loan than finance upgrades. I personally like the car and want more space than a Mustang.
When my daughters needed cars, I bought 2 - 2000 Buick Regal GSs. Supercharged V6 - 240 hp, leather seats, high speed traction control, side air bag, 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS, good gas mileage and cheap insurance for teenagers. Heck of a value. I paid less for the 2 cars together than I have put into my 95 Bird with new drivetrain and suspension. The body and rest of the Bird are still 10 years old with 140k miles and I still need a paint job.
