Wonderfull michigan roads.....(56k warn)

Well this is my sisters car, she hit a pothole last night and even though there wasn't any frontal damage the airbags managed to deploy. The wheel seemed to hold up fairly well compared to what it did to the lower control arm. The trans pan has a nice dent in it as well and is leaking now. When my sister came home last night it looked like somebody beat the crap out of her. I still can't believe that airbags deployed, which never happened when the car was in the frontal accident a while ago.

How old is the car? Surely someone could be to blame for that, the state or dodge? Because that is a safety item. Isn't there some law that safety items (seatbelts, airbags) have to work and if they don't due to manufacturer defualts they have to fix it for free?

Hope everyone is okay.

WOW.
I can recall seeing a Cavalier parked in the local mall parking lot a few years back. Both tires on the passenger side were blown out after nailing a pothole. I wonder if a lawsuit ever came out of it.

You said that the car was in a frontal accident a while ago and the bags did NOT deploy right? I have heard of cases where a car can be in an accident, the bags don't pop, but come real close to being deployed, and then some little thing will trigger them, something which normally wouldn't/shouldn't blow the airbags.

Yes it has been hit up front to the point of needing a new hood and bumper cover without airbags deploying. So maybe that could be the case. But either way insurance will cover this, we don't know yet if they will repair it or total it, I'm saying that because to replace all the airbag stuff that they need to will be a lot of money.

See that all the time around here. Last year a semi lost an entire front wheel/hub. Mines scraped a few times on some real bad ones. Lots of people driving around on spares from hitting the potholes. And the city wont pay for any damages, people gotta go through insurance and pay the deductible.

Worst is in the spring when they fill with water and you cant see them, lost the muffler on the Grand Marquis in one of those. And if anyone has ever seen the clearance on an 85 GM you know it had to be a deep one.

Of course everyone loves a hard worker, they do all the work!

Good to hear. I remember when mine went off recently I got cuts all over my chin and some minor burns from either the bag rubbing or the chemical inside. Look like I just got in a bar fight or something. That chemical stuff inside stinks up the car pretty good too. Took a couple weeks or so to really get it out.
Best of luck with it,
Shawn

i got into an accident yesterday around 12ish, at about 20-25 mph in my mom's 2001 tahoe. and no the air bags did not go off. if these are supposed to go off in the event of an accident to keep us safe, i dont want them in any of my cars if they dont work properly.

That doesn't look like the car hit a little pothole. Surprisingly enough, airbag sensors are pretty easy to trip, and deploy the airbags. I've heard some horror stories of mechanics working on the electrical system WITHOUT disconnecting the negative lead to the battery, and POP. Usually you should wait about 15 minutes after disconnecting the battery, making sure you deplete the left over charge to the sensors. I hope everyone is OK, and it's not to much of a hassel to get it fixxed!!!

Well little update, the cost to repair this is over $5,000 so the insurance is counting it as totalled. However they're only paying out $3,800 because according to kbb thats all that it's worth . Anywho, I've been car shopping with my syster and couple of contenders right now are a Monte Carlo SS and a Mitsu Eclipse

Those avenger's must have really soft wheels and/or way too tight a suspension because I bent two wheels on potholes as well.
