Well the bird is almost ready

I want give any times just yet, as it was awfully warm here today and I could not get the car to shift to 3rd, I manged to let completely off after nailing the limiter and getting back on it to make one complete pass but not a full wide open throttle pass, In 2 of the others runs I managed a 1.57 60 ft then my last pass twisted the half shaft off, so I've got it back togethor with 2 new shafts that are genuine ford axles, also the pass was on 19 degrees of timing, the car was tuned at 24 degrees so there is a lot of power left on the table, ill just say the time in my signature is no we're near what it ran today so I'm still waiting on a complete full pass so stay tuned

So what kind of half shafts did you snap? Gen2 marks are supposedly tough as it gets with ford parts. Or manual SC fat shafts...

Just my stock 95 shaft it didnt snap the shaft those it broke right behind the outer hub, very surprised it broke there as my cobra snapped at outer joint, very strange I'm sure the car is capable of some easy 1.55 60fts but time will tell, once I get a full on full throttle pass

Congrats Robert

Thats the same place mine keeps breaking the stock Ford halfshafts.

That is much better in the launching department. I'm figuring you made some changes to the converter/tranny along with the additional power.

Congrats on the new 60 ft times.

Congrats Rob. I'm glad to see you're getting some T&T times before the Thanksgiving meet.

I think the Mark VIII LCA's and DLF bushings helped to tighten up the slop in the rear and probably helped with your 60's as well ...

Robert

I'll take a shot at it.

Somewhere around a 10.2-10.3 135-137 MPH. With the E85 (Alky) and the current horsepower it should be able to go 9's, combination dependent.

Take extra halfshafts cause you'll need them before the end of the day.

Yea 9s are possible but alot of what ifs I've got going on, and the big issue is the 2-3 shift I had this issue last year but not near as bad as know, regardless it's done I'm outta blower, and I doubt I'll be upgrading it, the car is still a weight pig pushing almost 3800 with me in it with the amount of gas needed, I guess this Sunday will tell if weather holds out,

sounds like car is launching pretty damn hard!! Congrats on the 60'

As for those shafts, NO matter what brand, make, model or car that they come out of, they will always break at the same point....right behind the hub. unless he bearing are already shot.

I do believe the MAMN12 guys have broke the most half shafts than anyone and that includes me breaking 3 them myself. I broke two off in the same day at the track with a 5spd SC.

Its a totally different game with a 5sp sending the drive line shock though the HSs and youre right with a 5sp anything can be broken. I just didnt think an auto could break the gen2 mark half shafts. For sure though a 5sp could break them if you have the power and grip.

They are not that much better. I've seen them break on the first pass on a car too, same place. When you start launching and hooking down in the 1.5's the fact is you are going to break half-shafts at the axle hub period. Just a way of life.

When you are making upwards of 740 HP and 580 Ft lbs of torque you WILL be breaking them period. I can't even remember how many I've broken and the last time was two at once. Automatics that leave hard break them just as well as manual cars.

Not really. Yes its true that you have more shock to the drivetrain so its easier to break parts even with less power/torque.

However, in the 16 years I've been racing mine with the 4R70 automatic I've lunched the shaft in one transmission, took the side gears off an Auburn Pro Differential, and broken numerous halfshafts launching the car. 3700-4000 lbs cars with torque and hook break stuff regardless of Automatic or manual. Especially with High stall converters leaving hard with lots of torque from the get go.

So whats the deal with 31 spline cobra axles.
Do they fit our crap boxes with the proper parts?
I have an axle change down to 17min. 30 seconds.

Rick,

The 31 spline side is in the carrier itself I believe. Not sure of the spline count on the end shaft through the hub. It may or may not be the same. Yes the rear differential can be changed to use 31 spline.

Regardless, halfshafts are the weak link there on the IRS Mustangs as well though some have broken the shaft or the knuckle area as well.

The problem in the IRS of course is too much movement in the upper and lower control arms and the halfshafts that flex. Better bushings and such do help. Straight axles of course do not have that issue. It would have been great if FORD would have put solid axles in the cars.

I'm sure there is an aftermarket place out there that may make hardened halfshafts but you still basically have the same necked down diameter going through the hub. Sooner or later I expect it would still break. Just the nature of the beast.
Especially high HP/TQ heavy cars.

Do they fit our crap boxes with the proper parts?
I have an axle change down to 17min. 30 seconds.
The DSS stuff works but is expensive. Siska has 1.4 60's on them. I am at 1.52 60' so far. DSS has a 33 spline outer where most of the breakage is at.

Here is a link we were just discussing this stuff. http://www.sccoa.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127819
