Cruise?

Tony:

Sounds like fun - what are the schedule details so I can check to see if I can make it?

Hello Larry,

Glad to hear that there is someone in Cheyenne.

The plan is to meet down in Longmont at the Wendys on I-25 but if you would be coming down from WY I would meet up with you in Fort Collins and we would go on down to Longmont to meet up with any body coming from Denver area. We are hoping to depart Longmont at 11:00 AM and drive up to Estes through Lyons.

Picnic near Rocky Mountain and then cruise down the peak to peak route to Blackhawk for dinner at one of the casinos. Guard your wallet.

I hope you can make it. PM me if you want my phone number.

Cruise - let's go!

Schedule is looking good from here. What say we meet somewhere in Ft. Collins area along I-25 in the 10:00-10:15 AM timeframe and then run down to Longmont? Any leads on others from CO coming along?

So far the only other person is Glen Bolster and his wife Mary (my wife Susan is going). Glen has a very nice AED equiped 96 LX. I will have to get on the guys to see if anybody else is coming. There are a few people down near Denver and Todd out in Sterling has indicated he might come. Also there are a couple people here in FC I need to talk to.

We could meet in the Park and ride at I-25 & Harmony road between 10 & 10:15.

My number is 970 402-3308.

Have you done any mods to your car.

Larry,

Have you had the car painted yet? I had mine painted in Cheyenne.

Hi Tony -

As will become painfully obvious on our meeting, my 'bird has yet to see a paint booth -- maybe this fall; we'll have to see.

Re mods: nothing mechanical yet. My car has the Sport package with the 4-wheel disc brakes and 16" rims. New tires last year were Goodyear Eagle LS P235/60ZR16's which have served well although a little pricey, purchased primarily so I don't have to worry much about tire speed ratings. Did the conversion to the Mercon V trans fluid - worked well, highly recommended.

I've been reading up on all the goodies in the TCCoA forums on the 5.4L engine swap, transmission upgrades, suspension improvements, etc with an idea of starting to collect parts to do some mods.

Looks like Phase 1 would be to upgrade the rear end: drop and stiffen the rear subframe and control arms, upsize the rear sway bar, rebuild the diff and install the brace, drop the tank and upsize the pump, replace the driveshaft, install Raxles and new wheel bearings, and replace all rear suspension bushings. Probably makes sense to go to a true dual cat-back exhaust system during reassembly, and also do a rear shock tower brace.

Phase 2 will likely be to rebuild the front suspension with all new bushings and joints, upsize the front sway bar and upsize the disk brakes, maybe a new or rebuilt rack-and-pinion unit with new hoses.

After the chassis is ready for it, Phase 3 will be the engine, transmission and torque converter. An aluminum 5.4L with or without supercharger sounds like a good idea. I'd like to see 425-450 HP at the rear wheels but that may be a bit of a stretch. I'll be interested to take a look at the AED car at the cruise for sure, have not seen a SC V8 bird up close and personal yet.

Being into electronics, I have done some electrical mods to the 'bird. The fuel filler door has been converted to the electric remote-unlock style. Reading lamps have been added to the inside sail pillars for the back seat. An automatic lamp-test feature has been added to light up every lamp in the dash and VMM on startup, pursuant to the idea that an idiot light is even more useless when it burns out and you don't know it. The inner parking lights have been converted to operate as bright Daytime Running Lamps during the day and then convert back to standard parking lights at night. Alternating high-beam headlights, and a Traffic-Backer unit to alternately flash the brake and backup lights, have come in handy a couple of times, controlled by Mustang oval foglamp switches in the console coinholder cutouts, using the Yellow Upshift lamp in the tach as a pilot lamp that these units are in operation. The most recent mod is a conversion of the standard 120 MPH speedometer into a 145 MPH unit - should have it completed in time for the cruise. Looks like a standard 120 unit can be converted to any speed range desired - 160, 180, etc, then just change out the face overlay. A speedo reading to 200 MPH would look pretty good with a Canadian 200 kPh factory facescale on it, just ignore the kPh label. The stock radio was replaced with a Kenwood radio/tape unit with a 6-disc CD changer in the trunk, and the fixed broadcast antenna was replaced with a retractable unit. Matching black antennas on the trunk serve the Ham radio and a commercial monitor radio.

Looks like my wife Gail will be coming along as well, and we are looking forward to meeting some fellow TCCoA enthusiasts.

Haven't seen very many MN12's in the results listings of the Silver State Classic in Nevada. Gail and I have been talking about running in the SSC - anyone from around these parts that has run it?

Regards,

Larry,

I mention the paint because I had mine done at a Cheyenne shop. LA body shop over by Happy Jack road. It was sort of a comprimise job in that he did not remove all the moldings etc but I am very happy with it. You can judge on the 17th.

Also I know a good exhaust guy in Cheyenne. Danny over at Bigs Al's. Dont let the mess scare you.

Looks like Glen has rounded up two or three SC's to join the cruise. He is active in Rocky Mountain Thunderbird club.

I will give you call this evening .
