Zex Nitrous Dry Kit on stock '95 4.6

thinking of running a dry kit on my stock '95 4.6. for the record i dont care if i blow the engine up! =) would a 5.0 dry kit work fine for the 4.6?

i would highly recommend not doing n2o at all. imho

anyway, yes you can run a 5.0 kit on there....I ran a NOS brand dry kit for mustangs for a while, and it ran very well, and did not mess anything up.
I only ran a 75 shot, and going from a 15.8 in the 1/4 to a 14.1 was good enogh for me.
a 100 shot would have put me in the 13's.



Just make sure you get a tep or 2 colder plugs, knock the timing down a few degrees, and add a little more fuel pressure.

Just be safe with nitrous, it will run for a long time.

Don't be put off by scare stories about nitrous - if it's set up correctly it's not really any more "dangerous" than any other power adder. All it does is add more oxygen to the combustion chamber, same as a supercharger or turbocharger. It just does it chemically instead of mechanically. If you have enough fuel, you shouldn't have problems. Assuming you're not adding too much power to overwhelm the physical limits of the engine itself, that is. But that will happen with any power adder.

I ran a 75 shot on my Contour SVT and it was like a whole different car when I sprayed. I used a ZEX dry kit and it worked great. No detonation, no problems. I still have that kit and it's going to go on my 1997 Mark VIII.

My suggestions for N20:

Get a window switch. You don't want to spray until the RPMs get up, and you don't want to spray after the redline.

Get a fuel pressure cutoff switch. You don't want to keep spraying if you have no fuel pressure. That is just asking for engine damage.

Gauges are a good idea.

Pull some timing to be even safer.

The 5.0 kit should work. Just make sure it comes with the TPS switch to activate the system at WOT.

I've had a ZEX dry kit on my 96 Cougar since they first came out with it for the 4.6L back in the late 90's. If its used correctly it will last a long time and so will the car. I've had awesome success with mine. Follow the directions and don't try to get dumb with it. Like any power adder, you misuse it and the engine will surely go bang.

Again as mentioned, an upgraded fuel pump and pressure regulator is a very good idea. With those in place you can run the 75 - 125 shot with little problems.

Good luck with it and if you are planning to drag race with it, buy drag tires!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info, I do plan on taking it down to the strip. so ill be looking for some drag tires.

when I had the bottle on, the tires I ran were wore out H-rated bridgestones(crap), and when I would launch, I would not launch right off the bottle....I would wait until I was about a car length out, then I would activate the nitrous.....this would net me 1.99 60's, and that was with 3.08 gears, one wheel peel!
Now, when I would hit the bottle right on the line....tires would go up in smoke...

just lettin you know what worked for me.

but don't let tires make or break what you decide to do....don't be afraid to run it without drag radials or slicks.

Sure, tires will help maximize your launch, but not totally neccasary if your looking just for some fun.

I ended up picking up a Zex wet kit. i'm just waiting for weather to get better and i'll do the install. I'm currently working on getting the car to run right it doesnt want to stay running in the cold weather. if i start the car and then put it in drive it will stall right away unless the car warms up abit also hesistates so im thinking the IAC but i could be wrong.

well i've checked for vac leaks, none are there i've also changed out the maf with a newer clean maf. i pulled 2 codes which said banks 1 and banks 2 were running lean but that was due to a vac leak i found prior. i want to make sure this thing is running 100% before i install the nitrous what do you guys recommend i do to this engine? oil change, plugs, wires? coils? let me know what will work best as you guys have the experience when it comes to running n20 on these birds.

ok so iv been looking at nitrous kits for a little while now. im only eighteen and cant afford the good ol superchargers and such, so obviously a nitrous system would be my answer. i was looking at dry kits for my 4.6L. but my question is can you use a purge kit with a dry kit? or is it really not necessary? because there basically the same thing until you change the way it gets to the engine correct? and since it is installed before the nitrous solenoid i essentially can right?.. or is that completely wrong? im new with the nitrous sooo bear with me

yes you can use a purge on the nitrous line. unless you wish to shoot out fuel from your fuel tap lol! =)

The nitrous solenoid is in the center of the pic at the top. To the left of the red/black wiring. Its black and wrapped with the ground wire i believe.

THere is nothing wrong with the kit but i prefer the zex kit personally. I think the price is nearly the same also. ALot of users have used it with great succes.

96 v8 4.6 explorer, kooks headers, off road x, magnaflow mufflers, cl tb/plenum, lmaf, gt tube, xcal tune, alum shaft, 3800 dirty dog converter, darrin trans, 373 gears, hoosier slicks on fanblades, pbr brakes, Skinnies on front, No PS or AC, Aeromotive EWP, major weight removal (3380 LBS), 12.78 OLD COMBO.

alright another question. how long to the bottles last for, ...10lb...15lb...? say seconds wise. holding it down??

I could get about 10-11 good solid runs with my 10 lb bottle, and this was holding the button down 14-15 seconds at a time.(this was a 75 dry shot)

When I had the juice, it was $3.00 a lb....so a little over 30 bucks a fill.

dry injects just nitrous into the intake. wet sprays both nitrous and fuel into the intake.

and on wet do you re route the fuel line into the nitrous fuel solenoid, then to the plenium?
