Yeah a stock 3.8 will never take the abuse. The supercoupe 3.8 was a whole different animal.

i have been thinking about putting a supercharger on my 97 bird. i got it from a friend who put in a 00 explorer engine with pi heads. about how much boost can i run before i have to change any of the engine and about how much can i stand to gain from that.

My Car: 95 thunderbird lx: 3in Xpipe manifold back, no cat, flowmaster 40; 97 spec tail lights (exhaust and lights from the project car); ram air (4in dryer exhaust vent); hypertech chip; grab bag of transmission parts; and a little yellow lamp that has been on for the past three years.

Project BLUNDERBIRD: 97 thunderbird lx: 00 4.6 PI explorer engine; droped; 3.73 posi rear; about to get a t56

I've been running 6 psi on my explorer motor for 80,000 miles now. Sensible driving and a sensible tune are the key

94 bird computer tuned by SCT. I am running the SVO blower with the install kit as it comes in the FRPP catalog and I added a Mustang MAF and Lightning ACT sensor. I haven't had it on a dyno so I couldn't tell you definitively how much I gained. With good traction I am certain the car is good for 13's in the quarter but there are others here running the same blower with a higher stall converter that are in the 12's.

Thunderroad,

No boost is safe with hypereutectic pistons, if you think a great tune will keep a stock 4.6L engine alive forever, you are wrong.

I've seen two NATURALLY ASPIRATED 4.6L engines with busted/cracked ring lands on the pistons. No nitrous, no blower, no turbo. Things can go wrong even with a great tune.

Are you safer with less boost? Generally speaking yes.

Sure. I mean, depending on the condition and mileage, it may be in need of a rebuild (which can run you anywhere from $200-$1,000 depending on the unit) but generally buying a used blower is fine. Just make sure you get everything that came with it. I don't know how many used kits I've seen for sale that have been missing brackets here, or parts there.

My used vortech is running just fine 20,000 miles later...... And the 96+ N/A 3.8L's handle 11psi boost pretty good and should last for decent amount of time. Mine has 110,000 on the shortblock, the last 20,000 with 9psi boost and beating the living heck outy of it!
