Front Suspension Rebuild and SC Suspension Swap + Collision Repair

As many of you know I was involved in an accident last month in which something broke in my steering and I hit a center island median at 40 MPH. I have decided that that is an excuse to rebuild my suspension and do an SC suspension swap. I got the front subframe from an SC and I am replacing all suspension and steering components with new Moog parts. I have Eibach springs on all four factory Tokico struts (from the same SC) and the ARC actuators that I am going to run to a switch in the cabin so my ride control works. I am also buying all new rubber all around (Yokohama Avid TRZs) and a new fender, corner light, and marker light to fix what I broke in the collision. I am also replacing the chrome bump strips in the bumpers because they are cracked and peeling, but that doesnt really affect my suspension or my collision repair. I am really stoked because this will be a big handling upgrade and practically eliminate body roll. I will update the post with pics as I do the rebuild and install.

The starting point:

My car is going to look alot like this one when I am finished, but crimson of course.

Yeah well, its a conundrum.

I found one real cheap and with new rubber (not whitewalls either) and the Eibach lowering springs its going to look badass and handle even better. I think I can make the wheel covers cool again.

SC suspension and LX suspension are pretty much the same only difference is that the SC got stiffer bushings in the lower control arm and that they come with the longer shocks that make the car sit higher as well as the electric struts

thats right the sc stock sits higher than the lx stock, doesn't appear so because of the gfx but thats just deceiving trust me I own 6 supercoupes and 1 lx (not for long) not a big deal for you since you have the eibach's

moog stuff is good except for the strut rod bushings, be sure you get either the ford replacements or the rubber replacements from autozone, I've had good luck with those

I've personally had the blue moog strut rod bushings blow out on me in my red 90 5spd about 2 years ago doing 70 on the interstate coming around an interchange to another instate, was not fun to say the least

ebay used to have the clear corner set for like $25 when i ordered mine last year

general rule of thumb is to reduce body roll in the front you need to stiffen the rear

and for any type of handling those stock wheels need to go

i just looked over the pic... why is the left side of the hood low and the driver side so much higher??

did you check the header panel? that's that panel that all the headlights and corner lights bolt to, that maybe cracked, if so they have a plastic type on eBay that's 1000x better than the original fiberglass type

Thanks for the informative post man, I am going with new control arms that already have the bushings in them, it was actually cheaper than the bushings individually. I got the rear shocks and springs too and I am going to use those. The rims are temporary to longer term right now as I am getting new tires. My dads 280Z handles great with 215/70R15 tires on it, it shouldnt be too bad. I am not going for autocross type performance anyways, just an improvement over stock which I am going to get. As far as the corner light I wanted clear corners but I decided against them and just got a factory one.

What I am most excited about is rigging up the ARC... er... MRC. (Manual Ride Control)

It looks great at night I like it, is is going to look awesome when lowered.

Ford probably thought the cornering lamps were a "better idea for the 80s" and not for the 90s so they did away with them...

Update:

I dropped the subframe today. I completely rebuilt an SC subframe I got from a dismantler with new Moog control arms, stabilizer bar links, tierod ends, and bushings. I am going to raise the new one in on monday along with my Tokico SC shocks and Eibach drop springs. I have Tokico SC shocks (thanks speed95!) I am putting on the rear. I am currently looking for the matching Eibach drop springs for the rear and am obtaining them. I bought some new tires (Yokohama AVID TRZs, 215/70 15s) that I am putting on the stock rims. However they arent really stock because I am getting them powder coated and I am restoring the wheel covers. I got my new fender back today, I had it painted by Woodland Body Works in Woodland California, they do great work. I have new corner and marker lights and new chrome bumper strip.

I will post pictures up on here when the car is done.

Oh, I almost forgot. I am also getting together with my buddy who is gonna help me direct wire the ARC system to a switch in my cabin so the electronic shocks work.

Thanks man!

Heres how I found the strip. Go to RockAuto and go to: Ford / 1989 / Thunderbird / Body - Exterior / Bumper Trim - Molding

I ordered both the front and rear strip but they had to cancel the order for the rear one because they had none in stock...
