New lower ball joints feel stiff. Normal?

I just had both of the lower balljoints in my LCA's replaced (I know there's a difference of opinion as to whether this is economical, but I'm in the UK and the shipping makes the complete arm VERY expensive).

When I drove home I noticed that the steering felt a little stiffer than when before, and I just wondered if this is normal when you've ad new joints fitted, and whether they will loosen off over the next few days?

Both the joints were MOOG, or another good quality brand. They both have grease nipples, and they look like they have been filled with grease. They also have castellated nuts with split pins (in case that identifies the brand).

Also, how often do you guys grease the joints? My old joints were the sealed type. I was thinking I'd maybe do them every 5000m, when I change the engine oil???

Incidentally, the cars going back to the shop in a couple of weeks to have a new pair of front springs fitted. My annual inspection revealed that I have a broken RH spring. As there are none ANYWHERE in the UK or Europe apparently, they are having a pair shipped in specially, at a cost of £150/pr including shipping (approx $240!!). That'll teach me to drive an imported car :-)

I don't know how much more economical it would have been for you with the extra shipping cost, but considering the age of the front shocks, if they haven't ever been replaced I would have just replaced the entire assembly. Monroe makes an assembly that comes complete with shock and spring ready to bolt on, which I believe I paid roughly $130/piece for here in the US. Not bad considering most springs by themselves were close to that price. Was a very simple job to do (after I got the darn lower mounting bolts out from the LCA...).

As far as stiffer steering, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've noticed that after a particular suspension component is replaced my car feels a bit tighter.

You find yourself having to re-center the wheel after turns, right?

It will go away in a few weeks; you won't notice it at all after your reflexes adapt. (few days)

If I was in the US, I'd definitely go for a complete strut. Trouble is the shipping for the extra weight over to here would make it very (even more) expensive.

Yes, its not as bad that it wont center on its own, but in normal manoevering, it just feels like I need to apply a bit more effort.

I have an 87 Firebird also, and once when I had the lower swivels changed on that, they didn't tell me they had to be greased (most suspension joints on European cars are sealed). After a couple of years (I do about 2000m a year in it) the steering was VERY stiff, horrible to drive, and started squeaking. Once I realised, and pumped the joints full of grease, it transformed the steering. I caughts it just in time, so the new joints weren't trashed too!
