Cutting Stock Springs

I have a set of Eibach prokit front springs and SC subframe with Tokico shocks for my SC suspension swap however for the rear I only have the shocks and my stock rear springs. I want matching Eibachs but nobody is willing just to sell me a rear set. Im considering cutting my stock springs. What is the best way to go with that? Any tips? Ideas?

Just going off what I have learned from the autocross guys . . . Cutting stock springs (or any springs for that matter) will change the spring rate, and potentially ruin the ride and handling. IMHO, I wouldn't do it. I'd hold off for a rear set somewhere. Like I said, I have never done it. However, I have ridden in a fox body that was cut (approximately 2 coils cut from eibachs) and it was hard as a rock with terrible drivability. Either way it is your car and the best to you . . . just my .02 cents

There is absolutely nothing wrong when cutting springs (when done right). Yes, the spring rate will go up, but lowering springs have higher spring rates too

Like I said, I have never done it and haven't done a lot of research. I was just going off what the autocross guys tell me. If the majority here say you're good, then go for it

Now how should I go about doing it? I actually have an extra set of stock rear springs that I am not afraid to cut. And if I screw them up I can always put the others back on or try cutting them too.

Where should I cut? What should I use. Will I need to modify the housing?

The fronts you cut the bottom of the spring (the part on the perch of the shock, not the flat part that mounts to the body), the rears can be cut from either end.

Only use a cut off wheel to cut the springs and make sure they don't get too hot in the process. Also make sure to cut the springs evenly left to right.

XR7-4.6 is correct. I cut my springs as a temporary fix as I was dumping a lot of money (for me) into the car on other things and was a little short on funds. One of my front springs was broken so I trimmed a little more off and evened out the other side, I then trimmed the rears the next day after work. Driving it around for a day with some pretty intense rake was funny. What started as a band-aid ended up staying as the ride isn't too bad and stiffened it up a decent amount. The next time my car gets completely tore down (post graduation) I will replace them with proper springs. For the time being, the cut springs have been more than acceptable and have not 're-broken'.

lowered, koni sport adjustables, 4.30 tl in aluminum housing, mark 8 trans, j-mod, 93 mark viii ds, antenna hole=gone, kooks headers 1.75" primaries, 2.5" catless duals, midmount magnaflow, 96-97 sport wheels with 255/50/16 sumitomo HTR Zs, optima in the trunk, new motor...94 mark 6/6/08

When I changed my driver side front suspension out, my spring was broke, I'm doing the passenger side today and I will even them out.

92 Cougar LS 5.0: Air Silencer delete, Flowmaster Cat-back System, Big 3,Cold Air Intake,

when cutting them, start with 1 coil, then do half's.

It's strange as far as the ride/handling goes...but not nearly as bad as everybody makes it out to be if it's done right...mine has cut springs, they where cut correctly, and it looks great, handles like it's on rails, but rides REALLY rough, and if I hit the gas just right it feels like the front drivers side wheel bounces/hops/leaves the ground for a second, which is weird. But all & all if you want a lowered car and don't have the money for a set of lowering springs, cut away...but be careful, and get them right...not something I would want to try, but have at it

cutting springs

count the amount of live coils (not in the perchs)i.e. if there is 10 coils and you
take one off your spring rate will increase 10 percent. use only a cut off wheel as
mentioned above and do it in half coil increments - tire baron

I am probably going to cut off a single round only as that will lower it sufficiently and still fit in the perch without modification. I appreciate the input. You guys are awesome.

I have a set of cut coils on a '92port, ride is just a little stiffer than stock but if it weren't, it'ld bottom out easier wouldn't it? I really like it, not harsh at all. Also saw no need for more sway bar stiffness, stock is OK.

I also have a '95 LX 4.6, low miles, stock shocks and stock springs. Been thinking of cutting the LX coils for a 1 inch or maybe 1-1/2 inch drop? Looking for "how much to cut".

I have another set of sport "JJJJ" springs like on the '92 already cut exactly the same stored away, so may install them instead.

I'll look back soon to see how much would need to come off the stock LX springs (not sport springs).
