Want to go low

My 97 Thunderbird is at stock height at the moment, and I'd like to go a little lower. Unfortunately I'm not a mechanic so I'm pretty lost as to what I should go with. I've seen lots of different springs that lower the car anywhere from 0.75in to 1.6in. Then I noticed Tokico makes a set that comes with springs and shocks that lower the car 1.25in. These looked attractive to me as I think I'd like to lower the car about 1 - 1.25 in.

If I went with any of these options to lower my car, do I need to get anything else to compensate for the lower riding height? I have 16in wheels atm, but was thinking of getting 18in rims in the future. I read the technical article here on tccoa and it said that lowering your car tends to make certain parts wear more. Any help would be appreciated!

Go Vogtland.

Get an alignment after the springs are installed.

Replace the rear spring cups. You may want to replace and upgrade the shocks while you've got the car apart.

You won't need shorter anti-sway bar end links in the back.

The 16's and the 18's your thinking about will work just fine without rubbing issues with the 1" springs.

I'm running the tokico kit with 255/50/17s with no rubbing issues but proper backspacing with aftermarket rims is key. I love my shock/spring kit, but it was more firm then I was used to initially.

The Vogtland 1" drop springs sound like what I'm looking for. Would getting shorter anti-sway bar links in the back hurt? Or should I just go with the springs themselves? I just don't want to cause anything to wear abnormally or effect the handling in a negative way.

Also, will the Vogtland springs work fine with stock shocks?

No, getting shorter links won't hurt.

Yes, the stock shocks will work fine with the new springs. But, IMO, you're wasting your time not to upgrade them.

Does anyone know where I can find the 1" drop Vogland springs to buy?

I'm thinking of going with the 1.25" drop Tokico with springs, but I'm not sure if I need to buy anything else to supplement it.

I have a good question for everyone, will I have any rubbing issues with my 235/70/15 tires and the Tokico shocks and 1.25" drop springs? I plan to eventually swap in a set of tires with a smaller aspect ratio, but if I can hold off on that, that'd be great.

You'll be fine. Wide wheels and tires with lower offsets are what usually rub when going lower.

Okay. Cool. The only reason I asked is, my wheels with these current tires have a bigger diameter than the original set up with 215/70/15 tires. Occasionally, if I hit a big dip in the road, I hear something rub. I don't know if that is due to my combination of soft springs and cheap shocks or if the tires are too big. I'm getting ready to buy the Tokico shock/ spring combo for all 4 corners. I don't know what I was thinking when I decided on .70 aspect ratio tires vs. .60 aspect ratio's. I suppose it was the extra 1/32 of tread offered by going to the bigger tire.

If you aren't going to upgrade your shocks, at least consider new shocks when you are replacing the springs to get the lower ride height. Otherwise, you may be doing the job yourself.


New stock shocks will still be better than 100K+ mi original shocks.
Plus, they are stupid cheap from places like rockauto.com

Oh, I am definitely doing new Tokico shocks AND springs. I just submitted my order 5 minutes ago. The shocks are actually 3 years old. They are what ever Firestone threw in there for $600 (parts, labor, tax). They are really soft. When they were brand new, I didn't notice much of a difference between them and the set they replaced.

I went with monroe sense a tracs and they were firmer than the blown old stockers. But then fast forward to years later and they feel bouncy to me. Tokico is where Im going plus the SC springs.

Spinning pies like wheels.

DD driving my 20 year old project

Now with new ball joints...again

Okay, I was looking at my current gap between the tires and my fender wells. I took some pics. I was imagining a 1.25" gap reduction and it looks like I might rub. Am I assuming wrong? Look and judge for yourself.

Well, springs aren't happening now. Tokico is going to take 3-4 weeks to send me the handling suspension kit and the price went up by $100. So, I'm just getting shocks now. It's not like I go racing on a regular basis, no real point in going lower. If anything, if I really want to change the springs, I'll swap in a set from a Super Coupe or Sport.
