Quick question on 93 cougar front suspension

A friend lost what I believe to be his ball joint in his driveway yesterday. It was dark when I went to go look at it. It is the one that I have circled here with out the cotter pin. What is this part?

I believe that to be the lower joint. Correct?

He lost it? Like fell out? The car must have hit the ground! I had to go help a friend get his Ford Fairmont once when his gave out while he was going down the road! Yikes! Come to think of it, I saw a white 95 Bird in a parking lot broke down with a broke ball joint a couple of years ago - not pretty.

A couple of people have already preached to me on this board - preventive maintanence! I totally concur since losing a ball joint is a very dangerous situation.
